Cachar Admin tightens enforcement net on illicit liquor and LPG misuse

way2barak, September 27: In a decisive demonstration of administrative vigilance, the Cachar district administration has intensified its crackdown on illicit liquor trade and the misuse of subsidized domestic LPG cylinders in Silchar, signaling a firm stance against unlawful activities that endanger public safety and compromise citizen entitlements. Acting under the directives of District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, IAS, enforcement teams carried out a series of coordinated raids across multiple locations this week, emphasizing that violations threatening the welfare of the community would not be tolerated.
The first phase of the operations was conducted on Friday by the joint team led by Assistant Commissioner Unhale Ashish Vidyadhar, IAS, and the Superintendent of Excise, conducting targeted raids in Malugram, Itkhola, Circuit House Road, National Highway Point, Ramnagar Bypass, and adjoining areas. Acting on specific complaints, the teams registered ten cases, arrested eight individuals, and seized 5.7 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), 7.8 litres of beer, and 3 litres of country spirit, while also imposing fines amounting to Rs 20,000. Authorities noted that these operations were aimed at dismantling local networks engaged in the illegal liquor trade, which have long affected public safety and contributed to community grievances.
Similar raids were conducted on Tuesday,where the district administration, in collaboration with the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Indian Oil Corporation, and authorized LPG distributor agencies, launched raids on hotels and restaurants found illegally using subsidized domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes. On Thursday, The enforcement drive, also led by Assistant Commissioner Unhale Ashish Vidyadhar, covered Circuit House Road, Club Road, and the Ramnagar ISBT areas. Officials confirmed that eleven domestic LPG cylinders, each weighing 14.2 kg, were seized for violation of the LPG Control Order, 2000, and Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. These cylinders were placed in custody with M/s Prafulla Indane Agency, Rangirkhari, Silchar. Establishments found in violation included Hotel Shreea, which had two cylinders; Hotel Dreamland, with one cylinder; Hotel Kalpataru/Restaurant Diya, with one cylinder; New Hilara Marwari Tandoori Dhaba, with four cylinders; and Randhan Family Dhaba, Tarapur, with three cylinders. Officials warned that strict action, including imposition of penalties and cancellation of trade licenses, would follow against offenders.
Responding to the enforcement drives, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav reaffirmed the administration’s zero-tolerance policy. He emphasized that the misuse of subsidized LPG and the illegal liquor trade constituted grave violations that jeopardized public safety and deprived citizens of their rightful entitlements. He asserted that the raids served as a clear warning that Cachar would not compromise on safety, fairness, or rule of law, and that the administration would continue to act firmly against offenders to protect public interest. DC Yadav further clarified that these operations were part of a broader, sustained effort to curb black marketing and ensure that domestic LPG reached the households for whom it was intended, and he assured that such coordinated drives would be intensified in the coming weeks to maintain compliance.
The swift and coordinated enforcement measures have drawn widespread appreciation from residents, who welcomed the administration’s proactive approach. By targeting both illicit liquor networks and the black marketing of domestic LPG, the Cachar district administration has addressed pressing public grievances, reinforced citizen trust, and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety, equity, and adherence to law in the district. Officials emphasized that such drives would continue as part of a comprehensive approach to safeguard public interest, setting a firm precedent for vigilance and accountability in Cachar.
