Omicron tally in India cross 1000-mark & reach 1,270; 2 deaths registered

Dec.31: As cases of Omicron steadily grow across India, it seems that it might soon become the dominant Covid-19 strain in the country, as in many parts of the world. “Omicron has started replacing Delta variant of Covid-19 in India in terms of number of cases.

According to the health ministry earlier today, there were 1,270 cases of Omicron detected so far from 23 states and Union territories. Almost 374 of those patients have been discharged. Leading the Omicron tally are Maharashtra and Delhi with 450 and 320 cases respectively. On Thursday night, Bihar joined the list of states to report a case of the new variant.

India reported its second Omicron death from Udaipur in Rajasthan on Friday. The 73-year-old was also suffering from hypertension and diabetes. Earlier on Thursday,  a 52-year-old man who had tested positive for the new variant of coronavirus died of a cardiac arrest in the Pimpri district of Maharashtra.

On December 31, India saw a massive spike in COVID cases with 16,764 fresh infections and 220 Covid-related fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. It was after 64 days that the daily rise in the number of coronavirus cases crossed the 16,000 mark, taking the country’s COVID-19 tally to 3,48,38,804. The number of active cases of the infection has gone up to 91,361, according to the data.
