Gravity and Beyond: Assam University Silchar Kicks Off 5-Day International Physics Workshop
মহাকাশ গবেষণার নতুন দিগন্ত সন্ধানে কর্মশালা শুরু আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ২০ এপ্রিল : আইনস্টাইনের সাধারণ আপেক্ষিকতাবাদ ও তার ভবিষ্যৎ রূপরেখা নিয়ে সোমবার থেকে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শুরু হল পাঁচ দিনের এক কর্মশালা। ‘আইনস্টাইনস জেনারেল থিওরি অফ রিলেটিভিটি অ্যান্ড বিয়ন্ড’ শীর্ষক এই বিশেষ কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করেছে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগ, পুনের আন্তঃবিশ্ববিদ্যালয় জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞান ও জ্যোতিঃপদার্থবিজ্ঞান কেন্দ্র (আয়ুকা) এবং আইকার্ড। কর্মশালার মূল লক্ষ্য হচ্ছে পাঠ্যপুস্তকের তাত্ত্বিক জ্ঞানের সঙ্গে আধুনিক গবেষণার মেলবন্ধন ঘটানো এবং এই অঞ্চলের ছাত্র ও শিক্ষকদের জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক স্তরে গবেষণার উপযোগী করে তোলা।

এ দিনের উদ্বোধনী অধিবেশনে পৌরোহিত্য করেন পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের প্রবীণ অধ্যাপক অশোককুমার সেন। প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন দিল্লি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রাক্তন অধ্যাপক তথা বিশিষ্ট গবেষক প্যাট্রিক দাশগুপ্ত। প্রথা মেনে চারাগাছে জল ঢেলে অনুষ্ঠানের সূচনা করা হয়। মঞ্চে ছিলেন পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের প্রধান অধ্যাপক হিমাদ্রি শেখর দাস, স্কুল অব ফিজিক্যাল সায়েন্সেসের ডিন তথা কর্মশালার কো-অর্ডিনেটর অধ্যাপক অত্রি দেশমুখ্য এবং আয়ুকা-র কো-অর্ডিনেটর ড. অপ্রতীম গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়। এ ছাড়াও বিশেষ আমন্ত্রিত গবেষক বা ‘রিসোর্স পার্সন’ হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন আইএসআই কলকাতার ড. ভাস্বতী মণ্ডল ও আইআইটি গুয়াহাটির ড. সায়ন চক্রবর্তী । এছাড়াও অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বিভাগের অধ্যাপক বি ইন্দ্রজিৎ শর্মা, ড. উৎপল সরকার, ড. বিধান মহন্ত এবং ড. মহানন্দ বড়ো।

বিভাগীয় প্রধান অধ্যাপক হিমাদ্রি শেখর দাস আইকার্ড-এর মাধ্যমে আয়োজিত বিভিন্ন অ্যাকাডেমিক ও জনসংযোগমূলক কর্মসূচির কথা তুলে ধরেন। তিনি জানান, বিভাগে প্রতি বছরই এই ধরনের উচ্চমানের আলোচনা সভার আয়োজন করা হয়, যার ধারাবাহিকতায় গত বছর সেপ্টেম্বর মাসে অধ্যাপক জয়ন্ত বিষ্ণু নারলিকারের স্মরণে একটি বিশেষ বক্তৃতা আয়োজিত হয়েছিল। অধ্যাপক অত্রি দেশমুখ্য এবং ড. অপ্রতীম গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় এই ধরনের কর্মশালার প্রয়োজনীয়তা ও গুরুত্ব ব্যাখ্যা করেন এবং আয়ুকা কীভাবে এই ধরনের চর্চায় শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলিকে উৎসাহিত করছে, তা তুলে ধরেন। অন্যদিকে, বর্তমান কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তার যুগেও মানুষের নিজস্ব বুদ্ধিমত্তা ও গণিতের চর্চা কেন অপরিহার্য, তা সুনিপুণভাবে বুঝিয়ে বলেন প্রধান অতিথি প্যাট্রিক দাশগুপ্ত। তাঁর মতে, হাতে-কলমে অঙ্ক কষলে তা মস্তিষ্কের চিন্তাশক্তিকে এক নতুন মাত্রা দেয়।

অসম ও ত্রিপুরার বিভিন্ন শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে আগত মোট ৬১ জন প্রতিযোগী এই কর্মশালায় অংশ নিয়েছেন। অংশগ্রহণকারীদের মধ্যে পিএইচডি গবেষক এবং স্নাতকোত্তর স্তরের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের পাশাপাশি তিন জন স্নাতক স্তরের ছাত্রও রয়েছেন। সম্পূর্ণ অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন অতিথি শিক্ষক সঞ্চালী নাথ মজুমদার এবং জাতীয় সঙ্গীতের মাধ্যমে উদ্বোধনী পর্বের সমাপ্তি ঘটে। আগামী কয়েক দিন কৃষ্ণগহ্বর থেকে শুরু করে মহাবিশ্বের বিবর্তন— বিজ্ঞানের নানা জটিল দিক উঠে আসবে দেশের বরেণ্য বিজ্ঞানীদের আলোচনায়।

Way2barak, April 20 : The Department of Physics at Assam University, Silchar (AUS), in collaboration with the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, and the IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD), officially launched a five-day workshop today titled “Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and Beyond”. The inaugural session, held at the Meghnad Saha Conference Room of the Physics Department, marks the beginning of an intensive program running from April 20-24, 2026, aimed at bridging the gap between basic textbook knowledge and advanced research-level understanding.

The session was chaired by Prof. Asoke Kumar Sen, a senior faculty member of the Physics Department, with Prof. Patrick Dasgupta, former faculty from Delhi University and a key resource person, serving as the Chief Guest. The dignitaries on the dais included Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das, Head of the Department of Physics; Prof. Atri Deshamukhya, Workshop Coordinator and Dean of the School of Physical Sciences; and Dr. Apratim Ganguly, IUCAA Coordinator for the workshop. The event was further distinguished by the presence of resource persons Dr. Bhaswati Mandal from ISI Kolkata and Dr. Sayan Chakrabarti from IIT Guwahati, alongside departmental faculty members Prof. B. Indrajit Sharma, Dr. Utpal Sarkar, Dr. Bidhan Mohanta, and Dr. Mahananda Baro.

The event commenced with a symbolic watering of tree saplings, followed by an inaugural talk by Prof. Atri Deshamukhya, who emphasized the workshop’s importance for regional students and research scholars who often lack systematic training in General Relativity. Dr. Apratim Ganguly elaborated on IUCAA’s role in encouraging institutes to host such academic gatherings. Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das highlighted the department’s consistent academic record, emphasizing that many activities, both outreach and academic, are organized through ICARD. He also noted that the department organizes such conferences annually, citing a memorial lecture for Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar held in September 2025. Prof. Patrick Dasgupta shared insights on research in the age of AI, noting that performing mathematics manually can open the human brain to new dimensions. Prof. Asoke Kumar Sen concluded the addresses by reflecting on the department’s diverse activities since the university’s inception.

A total of 61 participants, including PhD scholars, M.Sc. students, and three undergraduate students, have registered for the conference, representing various institutions across Assam and Tripura. The inaugural program, hosted by guest faculty Ms. Sanchali Nath Mazumdar, concluded with the National Anthem.
