Woman Dies After Falling Into Maligaon Drain

way2barak, April 20: Heavy rainfall triggered severe artificial flooding across Guwahati on Saturday night, leaving several areas waterlogged and disrupting normal life. In a serious incident at Maligaon, a young woman was reportedly swept away by strong currents in a drain during the downpour.

The victim, identified as Payel Nath from Dharapur, was reportedly swept away by strong water currents amid heavy rain on Sunday. According to initial reports, she accidentally slipped into an overflowing drain while navigating through waterlogged streets.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed, and rescue efforts are continuing to trace the missing woman. The operation continued through the night, and in the early hours of Monday, her body was recovered. Officials later confirmed her death.
The incident has once again exposed the vulnerability of the city’s drainage infrastructure during extreme weather conditions, with open drains and poor visibility posing serious risks to residents.
The administration has announced the closure of all government and private educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area on April 20. Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary movement, and remain alert as authorities monitor the situation. Officials are continuing rescue and emergency response efforts.
Meanwhile, large parts of Guwahati remained submerged due to continuous downpour, severely disrupting daily life. Several localities reported massive waterlogging, bringing traffic to a standstill and forcing residents to remain indoors.
