BJP’s win in Bengal will check infiltration: Himanta

way2barak, May 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide win in West Bengal would go a long way in checking infiltration from across the India-Bangladesh border.

Addressing journalists after the BJP and its allies bagged 102 of the 126 Assembly seats in Assam, the Chief Minister said that the party’s performance in West Bengal was a victory not only for the eastern Indian State but also for the country beyond, especially the northeastern region.

“I am grateful to the people of West Bengal for voting for the development of the State and the security of the nation. Eastern and northeastern India can now be assured that our border will be secure,” he said.

Mr. Sarma said West Bengal was the missing link in checking the influx of “illegal immigrants” from Bangladesh. “With the BJP’s win, that link will be restored,” he said, referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “refusal” to provide land to fence the India-Bangladesh border for the last 10 years.

He said the Trinamool Congress’s “soft corner” for infiltrators encouraged Bangladeshi people to penetrate the remote areas of Jharkhand.
