AICTE rejects recognition of Golaghat Engineering College, future of 92 students at stake

May 8: The All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) has rejected its recognition for the Golghat Engineering College. In a letter addressed to the Department of Higher Education(Technical), the Government of Assam, AICTE listed a number of 17 reasons on the basis of which recognition was rejected, including a number of documents which are yet to be submitted by the college.

The letter of rejection was written by Prof Alok Prakash Mittal, Member Secretary of AICTE. Copies of the said letter were also marked to the Principal of Golghat Engineering College and the Secretary/Chairman, Department of Higher Education(Technical), the Government of Assam. The All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) is the statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.

It was further stated in the letter that the Letter of Intent (LOI) is valid for 3 academic years from the date of issue and within the validity period, after the establishment of infrastructure facilities as per the requirements, the institution can apply online for letter of approval anytime in the year for subsequent Academic Year, that is, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

The Golghat Engineering College was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal in February 2019. A delegation of experts visited the college for inspection on March 4th, 2019 following which it has denied recognition to the college in an official letter on April 30th, 2019.

At present, a total of 92 students are enrolled in different departments at the Golaghat Engineering College. The future of these students are now at stake. Students raised the demand that the authorities should take all possible steps to transfer them to another college or else their career would be ruined for no fault of them.
