Vice Chancellor of Assam University visits Women’s College, lay stress on inculcating skills

March 27: The Women’s College Silchar fraternity heartily welcomed Prof Rajive Mohan Pant, Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar to the college on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Accompanied by Dr Vikram Sharma, Librarian of the University. The vice-chancellor who made his first visit to the college was welcomed by the college fraternity.

Dr. Manoj Kumar Paul, in his address, said that the college has a total strength of about 1600 students in the undergraduate level and HS (10+2) level. The college has two streams, Arts and Commerce streams ( Commerce stream run on self-finance mode) at undergraduate and Higher Secondary level. He said that the college is planning to open honors courses in some subjects in addition to the existing ones and sought cooperation and help from the university authorities. Dr. Paul gave a brief background on the setting up of the college here.

Earlier, Prof Pant got introduced to the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college and Dr. Sutapa Sikidar delivered the welcome address and introduced Prof Pant before the gathering.

In an interaction with the college fraternity, Prof Pant richly appreciated the fact that the college is located at an important junction of the town and admired the way the college is being nicely maintained. “The college has an admirable leadership and an impressive blend of an experienced and young group of teachers which ensures the sustainability of the value system which is being created here,” Prof Pant said on the occasion.

Further, the vice-chancellor said “We are in the process of implementing the National Education Policy 2020 and the idea is to create a holistic development for the students. Along with their degrees, the students must also be imparted with necessary skills so that they stand on their own feet after passing out from academic institutions. Also, character building is another important thing to focus upon.

The vice-chancellor mentioned that sharing of academic resources between institutions will aid in the quest for excelsior as Dr. Vikram Sharma informed that the university will extend the digital library access of the central library for the college library, which will assist the academic pursuit of the teachers and students as they can avail the facilities through the college library.

Learning about the activities of NCC and NSS units of the college and the adoption of a village by the NSS unit from Dr. Manoj Kumar Paul, the vice-chancellor said that the steps taken by the university with regards to reaching out to the rural areas can collaborate with the college. The vice-chancellor and the university librarian took a round of the college campus and visited the laboratory of the Department of Mass Communication and witnessed the student activities and also had a brief interaction with the students as well. The dignitaries also visited the Central Library of the college and witnessed the facilities available therein.
