Aaranyak Urges Complete Ban on Drone Operations Near Amur Falcon Congregation Sites

way2barak, November 4 : Conservation organization Aaranyak has appealed to concerned government authorities for enforcing a complete ban on drone operations inside and around identified congregation sites of Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis) during their seasonal presence.

The appeal comes after some content creators and visitors were observed flying drones close to congregations of Amur Falcons, apparently in an effort to capture photographs and videos for social media. Such practices are potentially risky for the safety of these migratory birds, in particular the high-speed rotating propellers of drones that can cause severe injuries in case of a collision.

Amur Falcons are incredibly active and curious birds, often exhibiting aggressive behavior toward other birds, including species much larger than themselves. However, such behavior does not make them immune to dangers posed by drones operating in their immediate vicinity. Drone flights could also unnecessarily disturb birds at their congregation sites. Respect for the subject must always be the driving force behind wildlife photography and documentation.

“I am concerned about this practice,” said Udayan Borthakur, Organizing Secretary, Aaranyak & a noted Wildlife Photographer, we are concerned to see drones being flown dangerously close to congregations of Amur Falcons, apparently just to obtain aerial footage for social media. The high-speed propellers are a real risk of injury to these birds. No amount of photographs, videos or social media-fame is worth risking wildlife. We must remember that the privilege of viewing these magnificent migratory birds comes with a responsibility to keep them safe. Their well-being has to come first.”

Aaranyak impressed upon the concerned authorities of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council and Morigaon District Administration to issue suitable orders prohibiting recreational, commercial and other non-essential drone operations around the identified Amur Falcon congregation sites. It has also asked for well-demarcated no-drone buffer zones, proper enforcement by the Forest Department and local administration and public awareness programs to dissuade the use of drones around the birds.

Aaranyak has also extended its support and expertise to the concerned authorities for developing and disseminating awareness materials and conducting sensitization programs among the local communities, visitors, photographers and content creators to promote responsible behavior around Amur Falcon congregation sites.

The Amur Falcons make one of the most amazing long-distance migrations of any bird, migrating from their breeding grounds in eastern Asia to their wintering grounds in southern Africa. Assam and other parts of Northeast India are important transit sites for these migratory visitors on their annual journey. Ensuring their safe passage thus includes safeguarding their places of congregation from unnecessary disturbance.

Aaranyak believes that the basic principle should be that the welfare of wildlife takes precedence over human entertainment and personal interests, and responsible wildlife tourism and photography should be guided by this principle.
