National Girl Child Day observed in Cachar

way2barak, Jan 25 : Reinforcing the message that investing in girls is central to building a progressive and inclusive society, the Health Department of Cachar district observed National Girl Child Day on Saturday with a series of awareness-driven programmes at the auditorium hall of Women’s College, Silchar. The event, held at noon, brought together health officials, academicians and students to deliberate on the rights, health and overall empowerment of the girl child.

The observance began with a rally aimed at spreading awareness, followed by an interactive awareness meeting that underscored the need to protect and promote the dignity, education and well-being of girls. The programme witnessed the presence of several eminent dignitaries, including Dr Santanu Das, In-charge Principal of Women’s College, Silchar, Dr M I Barbhuiya, Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer (FW), Cachar, professors of the college and senior officials from the health department.
Delivering the inaugural address, Dr Barbhuiya highlighted that the girl child symbolises strength, intelligence and the future progress of society, stressing that ensuring her health and rights is a shared responsibility. He underlined the role of the health department in providing accessible services that support girls at every stage of life.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Santanu Das remarked that educating a girl has a multiplier effect, empowering not just an individual but entire families and communities. He added that safeguarding the health of girls is fundamental to strengthening the nation as a whole.
The programme featured insightful addresses by Dr Ajanta Das and Dr S K Nandi, who called upon all stakeholders to actively uphold the rights of the girl child, nurture her aspirations and create a safe, supportive environment where she can grow with confidence and dignity. Dr Gulbahar Raj, District Media Expert, NHM, Cachar, appealed to students and guardians alike to make full use of government-provided health services and immunisation facilities to ensure a healthier future for girls.
As part of the celebrations, the Health Department felicitated meritorious students of Women’s College, Silchar, recognising their academic achievements and perseverance. The awardees included Sunanda Borah, Yeasmin Aktar Laskar, Debangana Biswas, Monisha Nath, Puja Das, Ankita Paul, Riya Ghosh, Sakira Begum, Prathama Roy, Binita Chakraborty and Priyani Roy.
Adding an engaging element to the event, a quiz competition was organised for the students and conducted by Dr Ajanta Das. Winners of the competition were awarded prizes, further encouraging participation and awareness among young women.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Bappa Deb, Deputy District Extension and Medical Officer, Cachar, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, participants and organisers for their collective efforts in making the National Girl Child Day observance meaningful and impactful. The event was conducted by Sanjib Das,HE Narsingpur MPHC.
