Lower Subansiri Dam releasing 3,800 cumecs under safe operation: Pegu

way2barak, Aug 4: Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu on Monday visited the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh to assess the dam’s operational and safety mechanisms amid public concerns over water release and flooding.

During the visit, the minister inspected the dam structure, control room, Early Warning System, and reservoir, and reviewed the project’s flood management measures with NHPC engineers.

According to Dr. Pegu, the dam stands 116 metres above the riverbed, while the reservoir is currently filled up to 92 metres, maintaining a 15-metre flood cushion to help moderate floods. At present, around 3,800 cubic metres per second (cumecs) of water is being released downstream.

He said the highest inflow during the recent spell of heavy rainfall was recorded on July 13, when the reservoir received nearly 13,800 cumecs of water. Of this, approximately 12,500 cumecs was released in a controlled manner while sufficient storage was retained to reduce downstream flood impact.
