Historic kaziranga lodge reopens as luxury heritage retreat
way2barak, June 24: Kaziranga Heritage, the oldest government tourist lodge in and around Kaziranga National Park, has reopened as a luxury boutique resort following an extensive restoration and redevelopment project. Located opposite the central gate of the Kohora Range, the property has been revived through a Public-Private Partnership between the Assam Tourism Development Corporation and Centre Point Hospitality Group.
The historic property, which has welcomed generations of travellers since the 1930s, has been transformed into a 28-room resort while preserving its colonial-era charm and traditional Assam-type architecture. The resort features raised plinths, sloping roofs and wide verandahs designed to suit the region’s climatic conditions.
The accommodation comprises four distinct sections, including the heritage Bonani Bungalow, the restored Bonoshree Bungalow, Kohora River View Cottages and the luxurious Kunjobon Presidential Suites. The latter offers duplex suites with private plunge pools and landscaped courtyards, adding a contemporary touch to the heritage property.
The interiors celebrate Assamese craftsmanship and culture through bamboo wickerwork, wooden flooring and décor inspired by traditional motifs. The resort also showcases works by local artists and features archival wildlife photographs alongside tributes to renowned Assamese cultural icons.
Food plays a central role in the guest experience, with the in-house restaurant, Kazi Nemu, offering authentic Assamese cuisine and contemporary interpretations of regional dishes. Signature offerings include the traditional Assam Thali served on handcrafted bell metal plates and a range of innovative cocktails inspired by local ingredients and flavours.
The reopening of Kaziranga Heritage marks a significant addition to Assam’s tourism landscape, blending history, culture and luxury hospitality. The restored property is expected to enhance visitor experiences while preserving the legacy of one of the most iconic gateways to Kaziranga National Park.
