Fani: DDMA Hailakandi asks people not to panic & refrain from spreading rumour

May 3: Severe Cyclonic Storm “Fani” is likely to hit Assam and other parts of the northeast probably by tonight or tomorrow early morning. Most of the places in the region are likely to witness heavy to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. It is in this backdrop that the Additional Deputy Commissioner & CEO District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Hailakandi, EL Faihriem has urged upon the people of the district not to panic in the light of the cyclonic storm Fani.

The ADC further asked the people to adopt safety measures and refrain from spreading rumour in any social media platforms. The India Meteorological Department said the Cyclone Fani — the strongest to hit India in 20 years — is gradually weakening and moving towards West Bengal after which it will enter Bangladesh.

It is one of the strongest storms to batter the Indian subcontinent in decades. Further, the Eastern Air Command in Shillong has kept 15 helicopters on standby for any relief and rescue operation due to the impact of cyclone Fani.
