Cachar Administration steps up tobacco control enforcement on World No Tobacco Day

way2barak, May 31:– Marking World No Tobacco Day, on saturday the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) under the District Health Society, Cachar, conducted a special enforcement drive across Silchar in collaboration with the District Administration, Cachar Police and Silchar Municipal Corporation to strengthen compliance with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.
During the drive officials inspected various public places and commercial establishments to ensure adherence to the provisions of the Act. A total fine of Rs 5,800 was collected from individuals and establishments found violating COTPA regulations.
The enforcement team was led by Arunabh Choudhury, ACS, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate, Cachar. Dr. Anindita Chanda, District Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Piyali Chakraborty, District Programme Coordinator, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), Mousumi Bhowmik, Field Level Coordinator, NCD Cachar and Abhijit Bhattacharjee, Zonal Coordinator, Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) also participated in the enforcement drive.
From Silchar Municipal Corporation, Enforcement Inspectors Neetin Kumar Das and Kunal Das also joined the operation and assisted in carrying out the enforcement activities.
The district administration also reiterated its commitment to creating greater public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and ensuring strict implementation of tobacco control laws in the district. The drive formed part of the broader observance of World No Tobacco Day aimed at encouraging a healthier and tobacco-free society.
