Assam govt signals the end of Madrasas and Sanskrit Tols in the state

Dec. 14: In a significant move, the Assam State Cabinet has taken a decision on Sunday that the State Madrassa Board & State Sanskrit Board shall stand dissolved from the declaration of the result of examination to be held in 2021-22. This will have its impact on 141 high madrasas, 542 madrasas and 97 Sanskrit tols in the state.

Elaborating the move, State Education Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday said that the State Madrassa Board and the State Sanskrit Board, which regulates the Madrassas & Sanskrit tols would get dissolved. He said, “Assam State Madrasa Board shall stand dissolved from the date of declaration of results of examination to be held in 2021-22.” Further, teachers who teach theological courses in the Madrassas, will be trained to teach general subjects in the schools.

The minister said, “The Sanskrit tols will now be placed under Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit & Ancient Studies University and will offer diploma and degree courses on Indian culture and civilisation.” He further claimed that Assam will be the first state in India to launch a course on Indian culture & civilisation. He also added that all Madrassa and High-Madrassas running under the State Madrassa Education Board, Assam will be transferred under the Directorate of Secondary Education Council and the names Madrassa will be removed and renamed as high schools and colleges. Apart from this, all the 4 Arabic colleges in the State will be converted to Higher Secondary Schools and all the authorities of the Arabic Council will get transferred to Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).
