SC gives free hand to Hajela, directs to publish final NRC by 31 July
May 7: The Supreme Court on Wednesday while hearing on National Register of Citizens (NRC) gave free hand to State Coordinator for NRC Prateek Hajela while dealing with claims and objections of persons excluded or included in draft NRC. Earlier Hajela told the apex court that hearing on objections have started but very few people against whom objections were labelled were appearing.
A bench comprising chief justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman said that, “The State Coordinator is free to deal with all incidental issues, that may arise, in his wise discretion and in accordance with law.”
The apex court, however, made it a point that the final NRC is published on or before 31 July, 2019. The matter will again be taken up for discussion by the Supreme Court on 10 July, 2019 at 2 PM.
