3 Maharashtra youths carrying over Rs 9 lakh cash arrested in Tripura

Obaidur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of the Agartala Government Railway Police Station, said the three youths were from Maharashtra and they posed as passengers waiting to board the Kolkata bound Kanchanjungha Express.

The police arrested three people carrying Rs 9.56 lakh cash at the Agartala Railway Station in West Tripura district on Saturday.

Obaidur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of the Agartala Government Railway Police Station, said the three youths were from Maharashtra and they posed as passengers waiting to board the Kolkata-bound Kanchanjungha Express.

Officials said the behaviour of the three aroused suspicion. The arrestees have been handed over to the Income Tax Department for further questioning.

The seizure came just 48 hours after Rs 66.57 lakh cash was found near a lavatory on board the Kanchanjungha Express at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district. Officials said they were trying to ascertain if Saturday’s case was linked to Thursday’s cash haul.
