Twitter removes distorted map of India from its site

June 29: After backlash over displaying a distorted map of India that showed Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as separate country, Twitter has now removed the wrong map.

The glaring distortion, which appeared on the career section of Twitter website under the header ‘Tweep Life’, had triggered a heavy backlash from netizens on Monday as they demanded strict action against the microblogging platform that has flouted various rules on multiple occasions in the past. A twitterati wrote, “Dear @rsprasadji, This is how @twitter is mocking and challenging India’s sovereignty by using the map without Kashmir. My blood boils seeing this. I want to know what is your ministry going to do about it?”

Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari has been booked under Section 505 (2) of IPC and Section 74 of IT (Amendment) Act 2008 for showing wrong map of India on its website, on complaint of a Bajrang Dal leader in Bulandshahr.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s national president of IT cell Amit Malviya on Monday slammed the social media platform for posting an erroneous map. Speaking to ANI, Amit Malviya said, “This is not the first time that Twitter has got India’s map wrong and that’s perhaps the reason why intermediary guidelines mandate that social media and tech company employees should understand the local cultural sensitivities in territorial issues. I guess it is time to realise that there is inadequacy in compliance with the law of land.”
