Students of Assam Univ writes to VC, demands suspension of Anindya Sen

August 10: In connection with a Facebook Post, an FIR was lodged against Anindya Sen, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Assam University, Silchar. Rohit Chanda, a student member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lodged the FIR against Anindya Sen at Silchar Sadar Police Station on Saturday for allegedly making “derogatory remarks against Shri Ramchandra and hurting religious sentiments.” As per sources, a case has been registered against the said University teacher on the basis of the FIR. The case No. 2424/2020 was registered under section 294/295(A)/501 IPC and relevant section 67 of Information Technology Act.

Following this, a section of the students of Assam University, Silchar submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor on Monday, wherein they demanded an inquiry committee to be set up for proper investigation against Anindya Sen. The students drew the attention of the Vice Chancellor in support of their demand of constituting an inquiry committee by the varsity authority based on two grounds. They wrote:

  • “In a Facebook post, Shri Anindya Sen, Assistant professor, department of English, Assam University has
written “Aao Bhai Vidyarthi Pite” which translates more or less as “brothers let’s beat the students”. We think this is provocative post which provokes people for violence against students.”
  • “In a Facebook post, Shri Anindya sen shared derogatory remarks against Prabhu Ramchandra and case was registered u/s 294, 295(A) and 501 of IPC against him and the investigation is going on.”

It is on these grounds that a group of students of Assam University wrote in their memorandum to the Vice Chancellor: “Holding a post like Assistant Professor, one can not share any provocative post against students. On the other hand, posting derogatory remarks against Prabhu Ramchandra and hurting sentiments of people is also highly objectionable. It is in this context, that we demand for setting up an inquiry committee for doing proper investigation on the matter and suspend Shri Anindya Sen from the post of Assistant Professor.”
