Strict prohibitory measures enforced around nomination centres in Cachar

way2barak, March 22: —Anticipating a significant turnout of candidates, supporters, and the general public on the final day of filing nominations for the Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2026, the District Administration in Cachar has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain peace and smooth conduct of the process.

March 23, being the last date for submission of nomination papers, is expected to witness heavy footfall at the office of the Returning Officer. Keeping this in mind, Cachar District Magistrate, Aayush Garg, IAS, has taken a preventive step to avoid congestion and ensure that the process remains orderly and disturbance-free.

As per the order, no street vendors will be allowed to operate within a 100-metre radius of the District Election Officer’s Office from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on that day. Additionally, gathering of five or more persons within the same area during this period will not be permitted unless prior approval is obtained from the competent authority.

At the same time, the administration has clarified that these restrictions will not apply to personnel on official duty, including police, armed forces, magistrates, judicial officers, and those directly involved in government or election-related work.

Given the urgency of the situation, the order has been issued with immediate effect. The administration has also made it clear that any violation will invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The District Administration has urged all concerned to extend their cooperation so that the nomination process can be completed peacefully, without inconvenience, and in keeping with the spirit of a free and fair election.

This is stated in a press release issued by Regional office of Information & Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
