One-day workshop on Astronomy for teachers organized at Ramkrishnanagar College

Way2barak, February 22 : A one-day workshop on “Astronomy for School and College Teachers” was successfully organized today at Ramkrishnanagar College, Ramakrishna Nagar, Sribhumi. The event was conducted by the IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD) of the Department of Physics, Assam University, Silchar, in association with Ramkrishnanagar College.

The workshop saw active participation from around 30 teachers from various schools and colleges. The inaugural session was graced by eminent dignitaries, including Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das (Head, Department of Physics, Assam University, Silchar, and Coordinator, ICARD), Mr. Dipankar Das (Principal in-charge, Ramkrishnanagar College), Dr. Dipankar Paul (Head, Department of Physics, Ramkrishnanagar College), and Mr. Dhananjay Nath (Member of the Governing Body, Ramkrishnanagar College). Each of the speakers delivered brief introductory talks on the theme of the workshop, emphasizing the importance of astronomy education at the school and college levels.

In the technical session, Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das delivered an insightful talk titled “The Amazing Cosmos: Exploring the Wonders of the Universe.” He presented the latest research findings in astronomy and informed the participants about the active research being conducted by the Astrophysics Group at Assam University. He elaborated on their work related to asteroids, comets, and star formation. Prof. Das also discussed how young students can pursue a career in astronomy and urged teachers to motivate students towards this field. Additionally, he demonstrated the use of Android applications for night sky observation, providing practical insights into astronomy education.

The second speaker, Dr. Dipankar Paul, delivered a talk on “Space Missions of India,” highlighting India’s significant achievements in space exploration and the future prospects of space research in the country.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Dipankar Paul, expressing gratitude to all the participants, speakers, and organizers for making the event a success. The workshop provided an enriching experience for teachers, equipping them with knowledge and tools to inspire the next generation of students in the field of astronomy.
