One-day workshop on Astronomy for college students held at Karimganj College

Way2barak, February 23 : A one-day workshop on Astronomy for college students was successfully organized at the Department of Physics, Karimganj College, Sribhumi on February 21, 2025. The event was conducted by the IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD) of the Department of Physics, Assam University, Silchar, in association with Karimganj College. Around 50 students from the Department of Physics attended the programme, making it an engaging and informative session.

The inaugural programme featured distinguished guests, including Dr. Ramanuj Chakraborty, Principal of Karimganj College; Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das, Head of the Department of Physics, Assam University, and Coordinator, ICARD; and Dr. Dipankar Paul, Head of the Department of Physics, Rankrishnanagar College. The programme was hosted by Mr. Rajat Subhra Paul, Head of the Department of Physics, Karimganj College. Mr. Paul explained the importance of this workshop and encouraged students to choose a career in Astronomy. All speakers delivered insightful talks on topics relevant to the theme of the workshop, emphasizing the significance of Astronomy in modern scientific research.

A highlight of the event was a popular talk by Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das, who discussed recent developments in Astronomy and potential career opportunities in the field. He encouraged students to consider Astronomy and Astrophysics as specializations in their Master’s Programme in Physics at Assam University. The interactive session allowed students to engage with the expert, leading to an enthusiastic exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Following the talk, a quiz competition on Astronomy was organized, with Dr. Dipankar Paul serving as the quiz master. Students actively participated, showcasing their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. The programme was attended by notable faculty members, including Dr. Partha Sarathi Das (Head of the Department of Botany), Mrs. Debarati Kar (IQAC Coordinator), and faculty members from the Physics Department—Mr. Abdul Aziz, Dr. Suchismita Datta Sarkar, Dr. Sushmita Paul, Ms. Zeba Tahamina, and Mr. Subrata Das.

A significant moment of the event was the unveiling of the 12th volume of the departmental magazine, “Taranga: The Wave”, by the esteemed guests and faculty members of the Physics Department. The magazine featured articles contributed by guest authors from various institutions as well as departmental students. This edition was edited by Mr. Rajat Subhra Paul. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Rajat Subhra Paul, who expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries, faculty members, and students for their active participation and support, ensuring the success of the event.
