NFR Records 100% LHB conversion of all Long-Distance Passenger Trains

way2barak, 13th July : Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved another major milestone in passenger service modernization with the successful conversion of all long-distance passenger trains running over NFR from conventional ICF coaches to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. With the completion of this conversion, a total of 103 long-distance passenger trains, including 55 train services belonging to NFR and 48 train services belonging to other railway zones are now operating with LHB coaches, making the zone fully LHB compliant for its long-distance train services. This accomplishment marks a significant step in Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety, comfort and operational efficiency across the network.
The conversion of long-distance trains to LHB coaches has been carried out in a phased manner. During FY 2025-26, six pairs of long-distance train services were upgraded from conventional ICF to modern LHB coaches, while five new pairs of long-distance trains were introduced with LHB rakes. Further, during the current financial year, trains such as the Rani Kamalapati-Agartala-Rani Kamalapati Special Express Train have also been converted to LHBs thereby completing the process of LHB conversions of all long-distance trains.
The induction of LHB coaches brings substantial benefits to passengers travelling on long-distance services. Built with advanced German technology, LHB coaches offer superior crashworthiness through anti-climbing and anti-telescopic features, significantly enhancing passenger safety during unforeseen situations. These coaches are also capable of operating at higher speeds with better ride stability, lower noise and vibration levels, improved suspension and advanced braking systems. In addition, their stainless-steel construction, enhanced fire safety features and reduced maintenance requirements ensure greater reliability while providing passengers with a smoother, quieter and more comfortable travel experience over long duration train journeys.
The successful completion of this conversion programme underscores NFR’s commitment to adopting modern technologies and delivering world-class passenger services. The transition to a fully LHB based fleet for all NFR owned long-distance trains will not only improve the quality of rail travel for passengers across the Northeast and the rest of the country but also contribute towards more efficient and environmentally sustainable railway operations. NFR remains committed to continuously upgrading its infrastructure and rolling stock in line with the vision of Indian Railways towards more passenger-friendly and efficient transportation system.
