Firing at Assam- Mizoram border: SP Cachar & OC Dholai sustain injuries, 6 cops killed & several injured

July 26: Fresh tension has erupted on Monday in the Assam- Mizoram border at Lailapur. Earlier during the day, Mizo forces took resort to bullets and assault rifles. As a result, 6 jawans of Assam Police were killed and several others were injured. Those wounded were rushed to Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). As per sources, Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant, Superintendent of Police, Cachar and OC Dholai Sahab Uddin also sustained bullet injuries. Both of them were also rushed to the hospital.

Expressing his views, DIG Southern Range Debojit Mukherjee said that the Mizoram Police has encroached on the land of Assam and entered the reserve forest area. By cutting the hills, they had constructed police camps inside this reserve forest and also started to make a road inside the legal territory of Assam. As such, the DFO along with DC & SP Cachar, IGP Assam and DIG went there to serve the notice to Mizoram for encroaching the land of Assam. DIG Mukherjee informed that they were not accepting the notice served by the DFO of Cachar. He said, “In the meantime, the Mizo civilians and their battalion started pelting stones at the officials who went there from Assam, but still we maintained our calm. Then came the SP of Kolasib with whom we all were having a talk. All of a sudden, they started to fire from the top of the hill. This resulted in several injuries.”

Meanwhile, on being asked, Superintendent of Police of Hailakandi Ramandeep Kaur also rushed to the spot. Ministers Parimal Suklabaidya and Pijush Hazarika are on their way to Cachar to take stock of the situation.
