2 dead, 34 injured after bus carrying Home Gaurds on poll duty meets with an accident

March 30: In a tragic incident, a bus carrying Home Guards for the 2nd phase of Assam Assembly Election from North Lakhimpur to Hailakandi fell into a 90 feet deep gorge at Bandarkhal in Dima Hasao. Out of the 39  passengers 34 of them were injured. However, 2 persons lost their lives, which includes the driver (a civilian) of the bus Papu Bhuyan and Hemkanta Gogoi, a home guard. They were supposed to go for poll duty for the 2nd phase of assembly election which is scheduled on 1 April.

Assam Assembly electionsAssam Police top cop G.P. Singh in a tweet wrote, “34 Home Guard personnel received injuries and are being treated at SMCH Silchar. Senior officers of Silchar, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao and North Lakhimpur are monitoring treatment and folllow up procedures.” He further wrote, “We lost our brethren Assam Home Guard Hem Kanta Gogoi and the civilian driver on March 29th while the civil bus carrying Home Guard personnel from Lakhimpur to Hailakandi for election duty met with an accident at Bandarkhal, Dima Hasao.”

Assam Police further tweeted, “We convey deepest condolences to the families of the departed and prays for early recovery of the injured. We would look after the families in best traditions of Assam Police.” As per sources, the condition of two home-guards, Polash Bora and Tulan Gogoi is critical. The dilapidated road condition was regarded by many to be the cause of the accident.
