ওয়ে টু বরাক, ১৫ আগস্ট : দেশাত্মবোধ, আত্মনির্ভরতা, টেকসই উন্নয়ন ও শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে রূপান্তরের বার্তা নিয়ে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিলচর ক্যাম্পাসে শনিবার যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় পালিত হল দেশের ৮০তম স্বাধীনতা দিবস। বিপিনচন্দ্র পাল সেমিনার হল প্রাঙ্গণে জাতীয় পতাকা উত্তোলনের পর উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থের স্বাধীনতা দিবসের ভাষণে উঠে এল ভারতের বিশ্বশক্তি হিসেবে উত্থানের পাশাপাশি আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অগ্রগতির নানা দিক। উপাচার্য বলেন, একসময় বিশ্বমঞ্চে ভারতকে দারিদ্র্যপীড়িত দেশ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হত, এমনকি ‘সাপুড়েদের দেশ’ বলেও কটাক্ষ করা হয়েছিল। সেই ভারত আজ প্রযুক্তি, স্বাস্থ্য, প্রতিরক্ষা, মহাকাশ গবেষণা ও আত্মনির্ভরতার ক্ষেত্রে বিশ্বের অন্যতম শক্তিশালী রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। তাঁর কথায়, ভারত এখন বিশ্বমঞ্চে সিংহের মতো গর্জন করছে।

ভারতের উন্নয়নের বিভিন্ন দিক তুলে ধরে অধ্যাপক পন্থ বলেন, দেশের স্যানিটেশন ব্যবস্থার উন্নয়নে ১২ কোটি শৌচাগার নির্মাণ, ২৫ কোটি মানুষকে চরম দারিদ্র্য থেকে বের করে আনা এবং সাক্ষরতার হার বৃদ্ধির মতো পদক্ষেপ দেশের সামাজিক পরিবর্তনের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দৃষ্টান্ত। ইসরোর চন্দ্র ও মঙ্গল অভিযান, প্রতিরক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে ৪০,০০০ কোটি টাকার রফতানি এবং কোভিড-১৯ অতিমারির সময় বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে টিকা সরবরাহের মাধ্যমে ভারত প্রযুক্তিগত সক্ষমতা ও মানবিক নেতৃত্বেরও পরিচয় দিয়েছে বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।

আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অগ্রগতির প্রসঙ্গে উপাচার্য জানান, উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের অন্যতম প্রথম প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে জাতীয় শিক্ষানীতি অনুযায়ী চার বছর মেয়াদি স্নাতক এবং পাঁচ বছর মেয়াদি ইন্টিগ্রেটেড পোস্টগ্র্যাজুয়েট কর্মসূচি চালু করেছে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। পাশাপাশি জাতীয় প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক র‌্যাঙ্কিং ফ্রেমওয়ার্ক-এর গত বছরের র‌্যাঙ্কিংয়ে দেশের শীর্ষ ১০০ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের তালিকায় স্থান পাওয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সাফল্য বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন। তিনি জানান, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গবেষণা ক্ষেত্রে উল্লেখযোগ্য অগ্রগতি হয়েছে। ইতিমধ্যে ১,৪০০-র বেশি স্কপাস-সূচিবদ্ধ গবেষণাপত্র প্রকাশিত হয়েছে, ৭০টিরও বেশি স্পনসর্ড প্রকল্প পাওয়া গেছে, প্রায় ১৫০টি একাডেমিক সম্মেলন আয়োজন করা হয়েছে এবং একাধিক পেটেন্টও দাখিল করা হয়েছে। এর ফলে জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক ক্ষেত্রে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরিচিতি আরও বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।

শিক্ষার্থীদের সাফল্যের কথাও তুলে ধরেন উপাচার্য। পারফর্মিং আর্টস বিভাগের ছাত্র নেহাল ভট্টাচার্য রাশিয়ায় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করেছেন। ম্যানেজমেন্ট বিভাগের ছাত্রী ভার্গবী হাজারিকা আগামী দিনে ইংলিশ চ্যানেল (ইংল্যান্ড থেকে ফ্রান্স) সাঁতরে পার হওয়ার প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন। এছাড়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ১৯২ জন ছাত্রছাত্রী নেট পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হয়েছেন এবং অনেকে ইউপিএসসি, এপিওএসসি ও জেআরএফ পরীক্ষাতেও সাফল্য অর্জন করেছেন বলে জানান তিনি।

সবুজ উদ্যোগের ক্ষেত্রেও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সাফল্যের কথা উল্লেখ করে অধ্যাপক পন্থ জানান, ন্যাশনাল গ্রিন ইউনিভার্সিটি র‍্যাংকিং ২০২৬-এ আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ১১তম স্থান অর্জন করেছে। ক্রীড়াক্ষেত্রে প্রথমবারের মতো আন্তঃবিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সেপাক টাকরো প্রতিযোগিতা আয়োজন এবং ‘অষ্টলক্ষ্মী’ সাংস্কৃতিক সংহতি উদ্যোগের জন্য মন্ত্রকের প্রশংসা পাওয়ার কথাও তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।

ভাষণের শেষে উপাচার্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পরিবারের সদস্যদের আরও সক্রিয় ও উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষী হওয়ার আহ্বান জানান। জাতীয় উন্নয়নের বৃহত্তর লক্ষ্যের সঙ্গে নিজেদের কাজকে যুক্ত করে দেশসেবায় নতুন করে আত্মনিয়োগের আহ্বান জানান তিনি।

এর আগে সকালে বিপিনচন্দ্র পাল সেমিনার হলের সম্মুখ প্রাঙ্গণে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক, আধিকারিক, কর্মী ও ছাত্রছাত্রীরা সমবেত হন। উপস্থিত ছিলেন নিবন্ধক ড. প্রদোষ কিরণ নাথ, পরীক্ষা নিয়ন্ত্রক ড. সুপ্রবীর দত্ত রায়, বিভিন্ন স্কুলের ডিন, বিভাগীয় প্রধান-সহ শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষাকর্মীরা। উপাচার্য জাতীয় পতাকা উত্তোলন করেন এবং জাতীয় সঙ্গীত পরিবেশিত হয়। এরপর এনসিসি ক্যাডেটদের মনোজ্ঞ গার্ড অব অনার এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নিরাপত্তাকর্মীদের পরিদর্শন করেন উপাচার্য।

অনুষ্ঠানের শেষ পর্বে পারফর্মিং আর্টস বিভাগের ছাত্রছাত্রীরা দেশাত্মবোধক সংগীত পরিবেশন করেন। পরে উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক পন্থ ও অধ্যাপক চিররঞ্জন ভট্টাচার্য এনসিসি ক্যাডেটদের বিভিন্ন র‌্যাঙ্ক প্রদান করেন। সমগ্র অনুষ্ঠানের সমন্বয় করেন কলেজ ডেভেলপমেন্ট কাউন্সিলের ডিরেক্টর জয়ন্ত ভট্টাচার্য।

India Roars Like a Lion on the World Stage: VC Pant

Way2barak, August 15 : The 80th Independence Day of the country was celebrated with due dignity at the Silchar campus of Assam University on Saturday, with messages of patriotism, self-reliance, sustainable development and transformation in the field of education.

Following the hoisting of the national flag at the premises of the Bipin Chandra Pal Seminar Hall, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, in his Independence Day address, highlighted India’s emergence as a global power as well as various achievements of Assam University.

Prof. Pant said that India was once portrayed on the world stage as a poverty-stricken country and was even mocked as the “land of snake charmers”. Today, he said, the country has established itself as one of the world’s leading powers in technology, healthcare, defence, space research and self-reliance. “India is now roaring like a lion on the world stage,” he remarked.

Highlighting various aspects of India’s development, Prof. Pant said that the construction of 120 million toilets, bringing 250 million people out of extreme poverty and increasing the literacy rate were important examples of the country’s social transformation. He also pointed to ISRO’s Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions, defence exports worth Rs 40,000 crore and India’s supply of COVID-19 vaccines to several countries during the pandemic as evidence of the country’s technological capability and humanitarian leadership.

Speaking about Assam University’s progress, the Vice-Chancellor said the university was among the first institutions in Northeast India to introduce four-year undergraduate and five-year integrated postgraduate programmes in accordance with the National Education Policy. He also described the university’s inclusion among the top 100 universities in the country in last year’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings as a significant achievement.

He said the university had made considerable progress in research. More than 1,400 Scopus-indexed research papers have already been published, over 70 sponsored projects have been received, nearly 150 academic conferences have been organised and several patents have been filed. These achievements, he said, had further enhanced the university’s visibility at the national and international levels.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the achievements of the students. Nehal Bhattacharjee of the Department of Performing Arts represented the university in Russia, while Bhargavi Hazarika of the Department of Management is preparing to undertake a swim across the English Channel from England to France. He also said that 192 university students had qualified in the NET examination, while several others had achieved success in UPSC, APSC and JRF examinations.

Referring to the university’s green initiatives, Prof. Pant said Assam University had secured the 11th position in the National Green University Ranking 2026. He also mentioned the university’s hosting of the Inter-University Sepak Takraw Championship for the first time and the appreciation it received from the Ministry for its “Ashtalakshmi” cultural integration initiative.

Concluding his address, the Vice-Chancellor called upon members of the university community to become more active and ambitious. He urged them to align their work with the larger goals of national development and rededicate themselves to the service of the nation.

Earlier in the morning, teachers, officers, employees and students of the university assembled in front of the Bipin Chandra Pal Seminar Hall. Registrar Dr Pradosh Kiran Nath, Controller of Examinations Dr Suprabir Dutta Roy, deans of various schools, heads of departments, faculty members and other employees were present on the occasion. The Vice-Chancellor hoisted the national flag, followed by the national anthem. He then inspected the impressive guard of honour presented by NCC cadets as well as the university’s security personnel.

In the concluding segment of the programme, students of the Department of Performing Arts presented patriotic songs. Later, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pant and Prof. Chiranjan Bhattacharjee conferred various ranks upon NCC cadets. The programme was coordinated by Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Director of the College Development Council.
