Cachar begins Census 2027 field-level training

The inaugural training programme for the Silchar Revenue Circle was held at Cachar College, where seven training halls have been arranged for the exercise. A total of 1,171 Enumerators and 187 Supervisors attached to the Silchar Revenue Circle will undergo training during the programme.

The district-level training programme has been planned in four phases to ensure systematic preparation of all field personnel. The first phase is being conducted from July 20 to July 22, followed by the second phase from July 24 to July 27. The third phase is scheduled from July 29 to July 31 while the fourth and final phase will be held from August 3 to August 5. Training sessions are conducted daily from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., combining classroom instruction with practical demonstrations on census schedules, digital enumeration procedures, household listing, data verification, reporting formats and field protocols.

The training programme was formally inaugurated by District Census Officer and Additional District Commissioner, Cachar, Roktim Baruah in the presence of senior officials associated with the Census organisation.

During the programme, District Commissioner, Cachar, Shri Rahul Kumar Gupta also visited Cachar College and interacted with the Master Trainers, Field Trainers, Enumerators and Supervisors. He reviewed the ongoing training sessions, spoke to the trainees about the importance of maintaining accuracy and integrity in data collection, and appreciated the efforts being made by the Census Cell to ensure smooth implementation of India’s first fully digital Census.

Delivering the welcome address, Charge Officer, Silchar Sadar Revenue Circle, Arnab Kumar Baruah welcomed the participants and said the success of the Census depends on the preparedness and commitment of field functionaries. He urged the trainees to participate actively in the sessions, gain a thorough understanding of the digital enumeration process and carry out their responsibilities with sincerity and precision during the field exercise.

In his keynote address, District Census Officer, Roktim Baruah said Census 2027 marks a historic transition as it will be conducted through a digital platform for the first time in the country. He emphasised that the quality and reliability of Census data depend upon accurate field-level data collection and advised Enumerators and Supervisors to become thoroughly familiar with the digital applications and operational guidelines. He also appealed to the public to cooperate with Census officials to ensure the successful completion of the exercise.

The technical sessions are being conducted by trained Field Trainers, who were themselves prepared through two batches of Master Trainer programmes organised in June. A total of 57 Field Trainers from Cachar received training from Master Trainers Dr. Gongesh Bhattacharjee and Shri Surajit Acharya, enabling them to impart uniform training to field personnel across the district.

For the first time, the Census will provide citizens with the facility of Self-Enumeration through the designated online Census portal. Residents will be able to upload their household information themselves from August 2 to August 16, 2026. Thereafter, from August 17, Enumerators will begin door-to-door House Listing Operations across the district to verify and collect the required information.

To carry out the Census efficiently, the district administration has deployed 4,535 Enumerators and Supervisors. The Census will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, House Listing Operation will continue up to September 15, 2026 while the second phase, Population Enumeration, is scheduled for February 2027.

Officials appealed to citizens to make use of the self-enumeration facility wherever possible and extend full cooperation to Enumerators during their household visits so that the Census can be completed smoothly, accurately and within the stipulated timeframe.

B. Dutta Choudhary and Sanjit Mondol; and the representative from the Directorate of Census Operations, Guwahati.
