Admin issues comprehensive flood advisory as Barak river continues to rise

way2barak, July 20 : In view of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest forecast predicting heavy rainfall across Assam over the next two to three days and the continuous rainfall recorded in Cachar over the past several hours, the District Administration has issued a comprehensive public advisory, urging residents to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions as the water level of the River Barak continues to rise steadily.

According to the advisory issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, the prevailing weather conditions have increased the possibility of flooding, flash floods and urban waterlogging in vulnerable parts of the district. Officials cautioned that if the current spell of rain continues, several low-lying areas may experience a flood-like situation.

The District Administration stated that the situation is under constant watch and all concerned departments, emergency response agencies and field-level functionaries have been directed to remain on high alert. Necessary preparedness and response measures have already been put in place to deal with any emerging flood situation promptly.

Appealing to the public to exercise caution, the DDMA has advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement in low-lying, flood-prone and waterlogged areas, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. People have also been urged not to venture near rivers, streams, drains, culverts or inundated locations where water currents may become strong and unpredictable.

As a safety measure, residents have been requested to immediately switch off electrical connections if floodwater enters their homes and shift electrical appliances, important documents and other valuables to higher places to minimise damage.

People residing in flood-prone localities have been asked to remain prepared for possible evacuation and to extend full cooperation to the local administration and emergency response teams whenever required.

The advisory also cautions against attempting to walk, ride or drive through flooded roads or submerged stretches, warning that hidden hazards beneath the water could pose serious risks to life and property.

Households have been encouraged to keep emergency kits readily available containing dry food, safe drinking water, essential medicines, flashlights, batteries and important documents so that they are prepared in the event of any emergency.

The administration has further urged residents to remain updated through official advisories issued by the District Administration, DDMA, Cachar and other Government agencies. Citizens have also been advised to keep their mobile phones fully charged and remain connected with the local administration and emergency services for timely information and assistance.

In case of any emergency, the public has been requested to immediately contact the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC), the concerned Revenue Circle Office, Block Development Office, Silchar Municipal Corporation Control Room or the nearest Police Station.

The District Administration has appealed to citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours or unverified information and rely only on official sources for authentic updates regarding the evolving weather situation.
