Lions Club of Silchar Valley observes ‘No Smoking Day’

March 9: No Smoking Day is observed  every year on the second Wednesday of March, to encourage people to quit smoking. The day is celebrated to help those who wish to quit smoking as well as to raise awareness about the implications of smoking on an individual’s health. This year No Smoking Day was celebrated on 9 March. Along with the rest of the world, the day was observed by Lions Club of Silchar Valley.

During the day, Lions Club of Silchar Valley organised a street play near Goldighi Mall, Silchar, the subject of which was awareness as regards the evils of smoking. With placards in their hands, President of Lions Club of Silchar Valley Abhijit Bhattacharjee, Secretary Sanjeev Roy, Bandita Trivedi Roy, Animesh Bhattacharjee among others also gave loud slogans in connection with the theme.

Those who performed in the street play are Ajit Sutradhar, Mithun Roy, Subham Bhasfor, Mithun Choudhury and Raj Acharjee. The resource person of the street play was Ranjana Dhar. Invited artist Kajal Karmar played a lead role in observation of the day. Lions Club of Silchar Valley appealed to all to give up the smoking habits.

No Smoking Day was first observed in the year 1984 in the Republic of Ireland on Ash Wednesday. It was on this day that the clergy determined that giving up cigarettes will be a good thing for Lent. Over the course of years. the day of No Smoking has seen a shift and is now observed on the second Wednesday in the month of March.

It was during the 1920s that medical reports linked smoking to cancer and other severe diseases. Since then, several initiatives have taken been started across the world to convince smokers to quit their habit.
