A new feather in the cap: Assam University introduces ‘Online Admission & Exam Management System’

Aug. 19: In keeping up with the ‘Digital India’ initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam University, Silchar has moved a step ahead by introducing ‘Online Admission Management System’ (OAMS). This was formally inaugurated by State Education Minister, Dr Ranoj Pegu in virtual mode on Wednesday. The OAMS was launched during a formal ceremony which was held in blended mode.

The meeting chaired by Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of Assam University was also attended by Ashok Singhal, Guardian Minister of Cachar (in online mode), Cabinet Minister Parimal Suklabaidya (in offline mode), Dipayan Chakraborty, MLA Silchar (in offline mode), along with Dr PK Nath, Registrar of the varsity, Dr S Dutta Roy, Controller of Examinations, Dr Jayanta Bhattacharjee, i/c Director CDC, Sobhan Kumar Bedajna, System Analyst, Prof Sudipto Roy, Chairman of OAMS and others.

Speaking about the new OAMS, Vice Chancellor, Prof. DC Nath said, “Assam University has developed its own  Online Admission Management System (OAMS) and ‘Online Examination Management System’ (OEMS)for catering to the needs of of the University and its affiliated colleges spread over five districts of Assam (Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao & Karbi Anglong). This is first of its kind in the region which will immensely help the students and teachers particularly in enhancing the teaching- learning process. After days of hardwork, today we have assembled to formally launch both these two online systems in both physical and virtual mode.”

The Vice Chancellor further asserted that the present Covid scenario has further necessitated the introduction of such online platforms where the students can seek admission in colleges and the teachers can also conduct online examinations.

Inaugurating the OAMS in virtual mode, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu highly appreciated this move of the University and said that this would be a new feather in the cap. He also stated that a similar common admission portal has also been developed by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). The move by Assam University towards digitisation was regarded by Dr Pegu as a welcome move. Minister Parimal Suklabaidya in his speech said that this was the need of the hour. Such a digital endeavour will go a long way to aid the students at this hour of pandemic.

Guardian Minister Ashok Singhal expressed satisfaction at the introduction of OAMS by Assam University and urged upon the students and the teachers to reap the benefits of this system. MLA Silchar Dipayan Chakraborty was also all in praises for Assam University for launching OAMS and OEMS.

The University authorities informed that there are a total of 62 Under Graduate Colleges, 13 B.Ed Colleges and 3 Law Colleges affiliated to Assam University. It was further stated that, till now 34 affiliated colleges of Assam University have enrolled themselves in the  ‘Online Admission Management System’ (OAMS), whereas, the rest of the colleges will conduct their admission through their own admission portals.

All students who desire to take admission in Assam University or its  affiliated colleges, shall have to submit the application in a common Admission portal (applicable for those colleges who has enrolled in OAMS). Students can select multiple colleges at a time during admission subject to fulfillment of the requisite admission criteria. This new portal will simplify the system as the students will be required to fill up the form once in the portal along with their respective subjects for all further use.

The portal will be a single window for various activities of the students like admission test, assignment test and online examination etc. In this connection, a contract was signed by Assam University with DCG Data Core System Pvt. Ltd. in presence of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath. Registrar Dr Pradosh Kiran Nath signed the contract on behalf of the University with Debashish Sadhiya, GM of DCG Data Core System Pvt. Ltd. in the month of April 2021.
