Lockdown violators will now be booked in Assam u/s 269, 270 of IPC: DGP

April 20: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has warned the people of strict action in case of violation of lockdown principles. Those found violating the lockdown protocols will be charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 269& 270 apart from the charges under the Disaster Management Act. Those spitting in public place and not wearing masks in public will also be fined and booked.

The DGP further said that those four wheelers which have been issued lockdown pass shall run only with 2 persons, the driver and one person in the rear seat. Pillion riding in two-wheelers will also not be allowed. Only a driver and a handyman will be allowed to ply the vehicles carrying “essential” commodities. People were cautioned not to venture forth with their private vehicles if they do not fall under the ‘essential’ category.

Emphasis was put on restricting people from commuting without ID cards stating that ID card/ authorisation letters must be given to all employees by the organizations. The DGP also said that till now 735 “offensive” posts on social media have been deleted. Additionally, 45 people have been arrested so far for posts on social media along with 85 cases registered so far; around 200 people have been counselled.

Further, in a social media post, Assam Police wrote, “”We stand in solidarity with all Health Workers including Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics who are at the front line as #IndiaFightsCorona. Any misdemeanour or wrongdoing with our #CoronaWarriors will be dealt with strict action.”
