ওয়ে টু বরাক, ১৩ মে : বরাক উপত্যকায় কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রামাণ্য ইতিহাস লিপিবদ্ধ করে পুস্তকাকারে প্রকাশ করার উদ্যোগ নিল আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ। ইতিমধ্যেই এক্সিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিলের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী অধ্যাপক অশোক কুমার সেনের নেতৃত্বে উপত্যকার বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিদের সমন্বয়ে একটি উপদেষ্টা মণ্ডলীও গঠন করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। বুধবার বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রশাসনিক ভবনের সেমিনার হলে সেই মণ্ডলীর প্রথম বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। অধ্যাপক অশোক কুমার সেনের পৌরোহিত্যে আয়োজিত এই বৈঠকে উপদেষ্টা মণ্ডলীর সদস্যরা ছাড়াও উপস্থিত ছিলেন উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থ, নিবন্ধক ড. প্রদোষ কিরণ নাথ, বিত্ত আধিকারিক ড শুভদীপ ধর সহ অন্যরা।

বৈঠকে প্রারম্ভিক বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে নিবন্ধক ড. নাথ বলেন, আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শুধু একটি উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান নয়, বরং বরাক উপত্যকার মানুষের দীর্ঘ আন্দোলন, আত্মত্যাগ ও গণআকাঙ্ক্ষার বাস্তব প্রতিফলন। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ এব্যাপারে তথ্যভিত্তিক ও সম্পূর্ণ অরাজনৈতিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি নিয়ে গ্রন্থ প্রকাশ করার যে উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে, তা শুধু সময়ের দাবি নয়, নতুন প্রজন্মের কাছে প্রকৃত সত্য তুলে ধরারও এক প্রয়াস।

উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক পন্থ বলেন, দীর্ঘ চার বছর ধরে তিনি এই উপত্যকায় বাস করছেন। এখানকার কৃষ্টি-সংস্কৃতি যেমন অত্যন্ত ঋদ্ধ, তেমনই অনেক ঐতিহাসিক প্রেক্ষাপট রয়েছে যা বহির্বরাকের অনেকের কাছেই অজানা। এ প্রসঙ্গে তিনি আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠা আন্দোলন সহ মালেগড়, চরগোলা এক্সডাস ইত্যাদি বিষয় উল্লেখ করে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গৃহীত উদ্যোগের কথাও জানান। তিনি আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার ইতিহাস নিয়ে একটি আলোচনাচক্র আয়োজনের ওপরও গুরুত্ব দেন।

এদিনের বৈঠকে প্রাসঙ্গিক বক্তব্য রাখেন আকসার প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি তথা বিশিষ্ট আইনজীবী প্রদীপ দত্তরায়, বিশিষ্ট সাংবাদিক তথা দৈনিক সাময়িক প্রসঙ্গের সম্পাদক তৈমুররাজা চৌধুরী, হাইলাকান্দি এসএস কলেজের প্রাক্তন অধ্যক্ষ হিলাল উদ্দিন লস্কর, বরাক উপত্যকা বঙ্গ সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতি সম্মেলনের কর্মকর্তা তথা গবেষক সঞ্জীব দেব লস্কর, উইমেন্স কলেজের প্রাক্তন অধ্যক্ষ ড. দেবশ্রী দত্ত, নেহরু কলেজের প্রাক্তন অধ্যক্ষ আবিদ রাজা মজুমদার, বিশিষ্ট আইনজীবী নাজিয়া ইয়াসমিন মজুমদার, বিশিষ্ট সাংবাদিক তথা লেখক বিকাশ চক্রবর্তী, অবসরপ্রাপ্ত অধ্যাপক বিশ্বতোষ চৌধুরী, অধ্যাপক ননীকুমার সিংহ, অধ্যাপক বরুণজ্যোতি চৌধুরী, আনটিয়ার প্রাক্তন সভাপতি সাগ্নিক চৌধুরী, বিশিষ্ট প্রাবন্ধিক তথা উপ-নিবন্ধক ড. আবুল হাসান চৌধুরী, বিশিষ্ট কবি শতদল আচার্য প্রমুখ।

বৈঠকে বক্তারা বলেন, বরাক উপত্যকায় কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার আন্দোলন শুধুমাত্র একটি শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ার দাবি ছিল না, বরং এটি ছিল অঞ্চলের মানুষের দীর্ঘদিনের শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি ও আত্মপরিচয়ের আন্দোলনের বহিঃপ্রকাশ। তাঁরা এই উদ্যোগ গ্রহণের জন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষকে আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদও জানান। এই আন্দোলনের বিভিন্ন পর্যায়, সামাজিক প্রেক্ষাপট, তৎকালীন ছাত্র-যুব সমাজের ভূমিকা এবং কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার পেছনের বাস্তব চিত্র তুলে ধরতে একটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ গ্রন্থ প্রকাশের ওপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করেন তাঁরা। সেইসঙ্গে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার ইতিহাস নিয়ে প্রয়াত অধ্যাপক সুবীর কর ও সাংবাদিক বিকাশ চক্রবর্তীর পাণ্ডুলিপি থেকে তথ্য সংগ্রহ করার ওপরও জোর দেন। আলোচনায় উঠে আসে বরাক উপত্যকাবাসীর শিক্ষাবঞ্চনা, উচ্চশিক্ষার সীমাবদ্ধতা ও কেন্দ্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপনের প্রয়োজনীয়তা নিয়ে তৎকালীন জনমত ও আন্দোলনের নানা দিক। বক্তারা জানান, এই ইতিহাস শুধু স্মৃতিচারণ নয়, ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের কাছেও তা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দলিল হয়ে থাকবে।

এদিনের বৈঠকে উপদেষ্টা মণ্ডলী ছাড়াও একটি সম্পাদনা মণ্ডলী গঠন করা হয়। সেইসঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট সবার কাছে আর্জি জানানো হয় যে, আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিষ্ঠার আন্দোলন সংক্রান্ত প্রামাণ্য নথি যদি কারও কাছে সংগৃহীত থাকে, তাহলে আগামী ৩১ মের মধ্যে উপদেষ্টা মণ্ডলীর সভাপতি অধ্যাপক অশোক কুমার সেন কিংবা সম্পাদনা মণ্ডলীর মুখ্য সম্পাদকদ্বয় অধ্যাপক বিশ্বতোষ চৌধুরী ও অধ্যাপক বরুণজ্যোতি চৌধুরীর সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে। এসব সংগৃহীত প্রামাণ্য নথি কৃতজ্ঞতার সঙ্গে বইয়ে উল্লেখ করা হবে। শেষে ধন্যবাদ সূচক বক্তব্য রাখেন উপদেষ্টা মণ্ডলীর আহ্বায়ক ড. পিনাক কান্তি রায়।

Way2barak, May 13 : The authorities of Assam University have undertaken an initiative to document and publish in book form the authentic history of the movement for establishing a Central University in the Barak Valley. In accordance with a decision of the Executive Council, an advisory committee comprising eminent personalities from the valley has already been constituted under the leadership of Prof. Asoke Kumar Sen. The first meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday at the seminar hall of the university’s Administrative Building.
The meeting, presided over by Prof. Ashok Kumar Sen, was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, Registrar Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath, Finance Officer Dr. Shubhadeep Dhar, along with members of the advisory committee and other dignitaries. Delivering the introductory address, Registrar Dr. Nath said that Assam University is not merely an institution of higher education, but the outcome of the Barak Valley people’s prolonged struggle, sacrifices, and collective aspirations. He stated that the university’s initiative to publish a fact-based and completely non-political account of the movement is not only the need of the hour but also an effort to present the true history before future generations.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pant said that he has been living in the valley for the past four years and has come to realise the richness of its culture and heritage, as well as several historical developments that remain largely unknown outside the Barak Valley. Referring to the movement for establishing Assam University, the Malegarh episode, the Chargola Exodus and other significant historical events, he highlighted the university’s initiative to preserve such histories. He also stressed the importance of organising a seminar on the history of the university’s establishment movement.

Among those who spoke at the meeting were ACKHSA founder president and noted lawyer Pradip Duttaroy, senior journalist and editor of Dainik Samayik Prasanga Taimur Raja Choudhury, former principal of Hailakandi S.S. College Hilal Uddin Laskar, noted researcher Sanjib Deb Laskar, former principal of Women’s College Dr. Debashree Dutta, former principal of Nehru College Abid Raja Mazumdar, advocate Nazia Yasmin Mazumdar, journalist and writer Bikash Chakraborty, retired professor Biswatosh Chowdhury, Prof. Nani Kumar Singh, Prof. Barunjyoti Choudhury, former AUTA president Sagnik Choudhury, Deputy Registrar Dr. Abul Hasan Choudhury, poet Shatadal Acharjee and others.

The speakers observed that the movement for establishing a Central University in the Barak Valley was not merely a demand for an educational institution, but a broader movement reflecting the region’s aspirations for education, culture, and identity. They thanked the university authorities for taking up the initiative and emphasised the need for a comprehensive publication documenting the different phases of the movement, its social background, the role played by students and youth, and the actual circumstances behind the establishment of the university.

The meeting also stressed the importance of collecting information from the manuscripts of late Prof. Subir Kar and journalist Bikash Chakraborty on the history of the establishment movement. Discussions highlighted the educational deprivation faced by the people of the Barak Valley, the limitations in higher education facilities at the time, and the public opinion and mass movements that demanded a Central University. Speakers remarked that the documented history would serve not only as a recollection of the past but also as an important archival record for future generations.

During the meeting, apart from the advisory committee, an editorial board was also constituted. The university appealed to all concerned that anyone possessing authentic documents related to the movement for establishing Assam University should contact advisory committee chairman Prof. Asoke Kumar Sen or chief editors Prof. Biswatosh Chowdhury and Prof. Barunjyoti Choudhury by May 31. The collected documents will be duly acknowledged in the publication. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the convenor of the advisory committee, Dr. Pinak Kanti Roy.
