Price Hike: District Administration seals numerous shops on Wednesday

August 26: Wednesday witnessed long queues outside grocery shops of Silchar. The overcrowded streets and vegetable markets throughout the day was a common sight in almost all parts of the town. Exorbitant hike in prices of vegetables including potatoes and onions was what characterised the various markets of Silchar. Teams were sent by the district administration in various markets. However, people complained of excessive hike in prices of fruits and vegetables.

During the day, three wholesale shops were closed in Fatak bazaar for various violations by Asstt Commissioner. A shop in the wholesale vegetable market at Fatak Bazar was sealed for not having trade license and also for not displaying price board. Shop of one Bhakta Roy was shut for not having trade license and for not maintaining receipts. Further, this trader also hiked the price of price of radish. Shop of one Ananda Choudhary Das was also closed for not having trade license and receipts. On Tuesday also,  M/s Sunrise Stores of Fatak Bazaar was closed by the officers of the district administration. During the visit to the shop, Assistant Commissioner found that the store was selling commodities “with a hike in wholesale prices.”

During monitoring of the market at Tarapur, Assistant Commissioner closed down two shops of vegetable vendors belonging to Nepal Paul and Ranjit Das. They were caught selling vegetables without trade licence and that too at an exorbitant price.

At Rangirkari market, 3 vegetable vendors were ordered to shut their shops for selling potato at Rs.45 per kg and Tomato at Rs.100 per kg.

A joint market inspection drive was carried on by Circle Officer, Udharbond along with Supply Inspector to check prices of essential commodities at Udharbond market. One vegetable seller named Sandeep Roy was made to close down his shop for charging exorbitant rate of Rs 42 per kg for low quality potatoes.

Inspection of Price of essential commodities in Lakhipur Bazar and Fulertal Bazar was also done on Wednesday by Khiengte ADC i/c SDO(C) Lakhipur alongwith D. Roy, Inspector FCS & CA, Lakhipur. One shop ( New Paul Enterprises ) in Fulertal, Silchar Road ( Opposite to Central Bank of India ) was sealed. A grocery shop was also sealed for having a trade licence from Lakhipur Municipal Board for stationary store.
