Congress comes up with huge banner, urges people to write names of freedom fighters
Aug 12: In a unique move, Silchar District Congress Committee (DCC) has come up with a huge banner which they have put up outside Goldighi Mall at Premtola, Silchar. The flex measuring 40 feet by 6 feet contains images of those who fought bravely against the imperialist British Raj and helped India to achieve its much cherished independence. Offering rich tributes to these brave patriots, Silchar DCC also wrote names of many other freedom fighters who being inspired by the ideology of the Indian National Congress, fought against the once mighty British. At the right hand corner of this huge flex, the Congress party made an appeal to the people in general to come up and write the names of freedom fighters who were left out in the adjacent list. A blank space was provided for the people to write the names of such freedom fighters.
Elaborating upon this unique move, President of Silchar Congress, Tamal Kanti Banik said, “Since its foundation in 1885, Congress has been there to create awareness among the people about the evil effects of British rule in India. Being inspired by the ideology of the Congress, people from the length and breadth of the country joined the freedom movement. On the occasion of the 75th year of Indian Independence, I congratulate the people of this country on behalf of the party which led the freedom struggle and won freedom for the nation. We also offer our humble tribute to these freedom fighters.”
So, what is the purpose of putting up of this huge flex in the town? To this, District Congress President, Tamal Banik replied, “Look, we have included some pictures of those who fought for the country’s independence. Some of them like Lakhshmi Bai, Tantia Tope etc fought against the British during 1857, much before the birth of the Congress. A few others included here believed in revolutionary ideology. Then we have also written some of the names of freedom fighters. Finally, at the end of the flex, we have kept a blank space. In this blank space, we have appealed to the people to include any name(s) of freedom fighters which we may have missed in our list.”
“Our intention is that the people, especially the new generation should know the real history of the freedom movement. Now-a-days, many claims and counter claims are being made to belittle the achievements of the Congress and the freedom fighters in achieving India’s Independence. So we have made an open appeal through this huge 40 feet by 6 feet flex to the people to write the names of the freedom fighters whom they think we may have missed in our list provided in the same flex. Once this is done, it will come to the forefront a comprehensive list of those persons behind the great Indian Freedom Movement. It will then be of immense help for the new generation to know them and understand the events that led to the birth of modern India,” added Tamal Kanti Banik.
