Former Municipal Commissioner & Congress leader Ranjit Roy passes away

Sept. 5: Ranjit Roy, former Ward Commissioner of Ward No. 15 and a Congress leader breathed his last at 7.15 PM on 5 September at his residence. He was 69. Ranjit Roy was also the Vice Chairman of Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) for a brief period of time. He is survived by his wife Madhabi Roy, son Surajit Roy, daughter Mousumi Das and a host of kith and kin.

Ranjit Roy was a resident of Sonai Road and was President of the local Tarun Club for several years. He was also associated with Gopalji Akhra near Rangirkhari and was a Trustee there. For some time, he was closely connected with Veteran’s Cricket Association, Silchar. Ranjit Roy was the General Secretary of Silchar District Congress Committee. Apart from this, he was a lifetime member of Silchar DSA and a honorary member of India Club.

He was suffering from Cancer for quite some time and was initially undergoing treatment in Kolkata. However, a few days ago, his condition suddenly deteriorated and he was admitted at Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre. As his condition worsened, he was then kept in ICU. However, all efforts went in vain and he ultimately passed away on Sunday evening. His death was mourned by many from different spheres of life.

Update: His last journey began from his home at Sonai Road on Sunday night from where his body was taken to Gopalji Akhra. The next destination was the office of Silchar Municipal Board, where former Chairman Tamal Kanti Banik, ex-Ward Commissioners Atanu Bhattacharjee, Alok Kar, Ratan Sarkar and staff of SMB offered floral tribute.

The next destination was DSA Silchar where wreath on his body was placed by DSA President Babul Hore, Secretary Vijendra Prasad Singh along with Dr Siddhartha Bhattacharjee and others. From there, his body was taken to District Congress Office where floral tributes were paid by Arun Dutta Mazumdar, Sanjib Roy, Abhijeet Paul & others.

The final destination was Silchar crematorium where Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, former MP and Congress leader Kamalendu Bhattacharjee, TMC leader Rajesh Deb and many others paid their final tribute to Ranjit Roy.
