“Yoga is the gateway to preventive healthcare,” says Dr. Bhaskar Gupta
SMCH’s International Yoga Day celebration

way2barak, June 22:–– “Yoga is not merely an exercise; it is the gateway to preventive healthcare, a science that integrates the mind, body, and soul,” said Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), as he addressed a packed audience at the Alumni Hall during the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations on saturday morning. In his eloquent and insightful speech, Dr. Gupta stressed the relevance of yoga in the medical profession, highlighting its ability to reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and fortify physical resilience—qualities essential for doctors, students, and caregivers alike.
He further added that the integration of yoga into daily life, especially in a medical environment, cultivates discipline, inner peace, and resilience, which are essential traits for those committed to the service of humanity.
The Principal SMCH Dr Bhaskar Gupta’s address set the tone for the day, inspiring the large gathering of faculty members and medical students who had assembled to commemorate the global wellness movement. “In a field where we deal with illness and suffering daily, yoga offers a path to internal balance, emotional strength, and holistic health. It is time we make it an indispensable part of our lifestyle and curriculum,” he added.
The event began with the live telecast of the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address, during which he underscored yoga as India’s timeless gift to humanity. The attendees listened with rapt attention as the Prime Minister spoke about the transformative power of yoga in fostering peace, discipline, and universal harmony.
Following the telecast, the hall transitioned into a serene space as the designated yoga trainer of SMCH led a guided session strictly in accordance with the Common Yoga Protocol prescribed by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The participants performed a series of asanas and pranayama practices, immersing themselves in the rhythmic flow of breath and movement that symbolises the essence of yoga.
A healthy and engaging interaction followed the session, where participants shared their thoughts and queries with the yoga trainer. Many students expressed their resolve to incorporate yoga into their daily lives, especially to cope with the pressures of academic and clinical responsibilities.
The event was also attended by Dr Debo Kumar Chakraborty, Superintendent, Dr Bikash Sandilyo, Additional Superintendent, Dr Ajit Dey , Deputy Superintendent and many other senior faculties.
The successful observance of International Yoga Day at SMCH not only reflected the institution’s commitment to holistic education and well-being but also reignited the message that ancient practices like yoga remain profoundly relevant in today’s fast-paced medical landscape.
