  • 27 March, 1668: The Royal Charter of 27 March 1668 by King Charles II, led to the transfer of Bombay from Charles II to the English East India Company for an annual rent of £10. Sir George Oxenden became the first Governor of Bombay under the regime of the Company.
  • 27 March, 1898: Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a leading Muslim reformer and educationist who was arguably the most important political voice among Indian Muslims in the latter half of the 19th century and the founder of the Aligarh Movement was born on this day.
  • 27 March, 1909: For the first time fingerprint evidence is used to solve a murder case. The worlds first official Fingerprint Bureau was founded in Scotland Yard in 1901. It should also be noted that the World’s first Fingerprint Bureau opened in Calcutta, India in 1897.
  • 27 March, 1915: Typhoid Mary [Mary Mallon] is arrested and returned to quarantine on North Brother Island, New York after spending five years evading health authorities and causing several further outbreaks of typhoid
  • 27 March, 1920: Famine was just starting in Russia due a food shortage. No wheat flour was available caused by disturbances in agriculture during the World War I and the Russian Revolution and civil war that followed.
  • 27 March, 1931: Charlie Chaplin receives France’s distinguished Legion of Honor.
  • 27 March, 1942: Mahatma Gandhi met Sir Stafford Cripps in New Delhi. He later on described Cripps Proposal to be a ‘post-dated cheque
  • 27 March, 1966: Following her election as Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi arrives in the U.S. for a meeting with President Johnson.
  • 27 March, 1968: Yuri Gagarin, the famous Russian cosmonaut who flew the world’s first manned space mission, died during a training flight.
  • 27 March, 1977: 583 die in aviation’s worst ever disaster when two Boeing 747s collide at Tenerife airport in Spain.
  • 27 March, 1980: Volcano Mount St Helens in Washington state becomes active after 123 years.
  • 27 March, 2015: President of India Confers Bharat Ratna on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Bharat Ratna on Atal Bihari Vajpayee on this day in New Delhi. In a special gesture, the President conferred the Award in a ceremony held at the residence of Shri Vajpayee.
  • 27 March, 2019: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces the country is now a “space power” after successfully shooting down a satellite from space in a ballistic missile test.
