Flood 2.0 on the cards! Torrential rainfall inundates Silchar town

June 18: Torrential rainfall since the last 4 to 5 days has resulted in flooding of all major rivers in Barak Valley. The water level of River Barak and its tributaries have already crossed the danger level. If the rainfall continues for another 24 hours, then it appears that Barak Valley will soon witness Flood 2.0. It needs mention here that the valley witnessed flood just a month ago in May.

Incessant rainfall has inundated various parts of Silchar town like Sonai Road, Link Road, National Highway, Shillongpatty, Nagatilla parts of Itkhola, Ghoniwala, Malugram, Subhas Nagar, College Road, Ashram Road, Public School Road etc. Since Friday night, Cachar is witnessing non-stop rainfall. As the schools are open and many of them like Holy Cross HS School, Silchar Collegiate School are having their Unit Test, school children were seen to walk through the submerged road with great difficulties. Parents and guardians have expressed great resentment and said that either the district administration or the school authorities should postpone the ongoing Unit test examination till the situation is normalised.

Meanwhile, due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak has again started to rise and crossed the danger level at 11 AM today. On Saturday, the water level at Annapurna Ghat was gradually increasing. From 1 AM on Saturday, the water level of Barak increased from 19.49 mt to 20.09 mt at 1 PM.

As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 1 PM on Saturday, was flowing above the danger level and was recorded at 20.09 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is increasing at 11 cm per hour. The highest flood level at this point was recorded at 21.763 on 11 September, 2007.
