Nation bids farewell to Vajpayee: Cremation takes place at Smriti Sthal

তাঁকে শ্রদ্ধা জানাতে কাকভোর থেকে লাইনে দাঁড়িয়েছিল সাধারণ মানুষ। দীনদয়াল মার্গে ছিল একেবারে বাঁধভাঙা অবস্থা। শেষযাত্রায় শববাহী শকটের পাশে পাশে হাঁটলেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদি, বিজেপি সভাপতি অমিত শাহ।

আজ সন্ধ্যায় পূর্ণ রাষ্ট্রীয় মর্যাদায় প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী অটলবিহারী বাজপেয়ীর শেষকৃত্য সম্পন্ন হয়। তাঁকে শেষশ্রদ্ধা জানাতে উপস্থিত ছিলেন সার্ক রাষ্ট্র সমূহের প্রতিনিধিরাও । ভুটানের রাজা জিগমে খেসার নামগিয়াল ওয়াংচুক ও বাংলাদেশের বিদেশমন্ত্রী আবুল হাসান মহম্মদ আলি দিনের শুরুতেই দিল্লি পৌঁছান। আসেন শ্রীলঙ্কার ভারপ্রাপ্ত বিদেশমন্ত্রী লক্ষণ কৈরালা, নেপালের বিদেশমন্ত্রী প্রদীপ গোয়াইলি, পাকিস্তানের ভারপ্রাপ্ত তথ্যমন্ত্রী সৈয়দ জাফর আলিও। কংগ্রেস সভাপতি রাহুল গান্ধী, অন্ধ্রপ্রদেশের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী এন চন্দ্রবাবু নাইডু, জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা উপদেষ্টা অজিত দোভাল, সেনাপ্রধান বিপিন রাওয়াত, নৌবাহিনীর প্রধান সুনীল লাম্বা, আরএসএস প্রধান মোহন ভাগবত তাঁর সরকারি বাসভবনে গিয়ে শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে আসেন। রাহুল গান্ধী পরে রাষ্ট্রীয় স্মৃতি স্থলেও উপস্থিত ছিলেন। রাষ্ট্রপতি রামনাথ কোবিন্দ, প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী মনমোহন সিংহও শেষকৃত্যে অংশ নেন।

গতকাল সন্ধ্যা ৫ টা ৫ মিনিটে ৯৩ বছর বয়সে দিল্লির এইমস হাসপাতালে তাঁর জীবনাবসান ঘটে। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সরকার সাতদিনের রাষ্ট্রীয় শোক ঘোষণা করে। জাতীয় পতাকা অর্ধনমিত করা হয়।

Former prime minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee cremated with full state honours at Smriti Sthal in New Delhi on Friday. Thousands of mourners jostled and some clambered on trees to catch a glimpse of the last rites of their favourite poet-politician. Vajpayees’s daughter Namita Bhattacharjee lit the pyre of former Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister, BJP chief Amit Shah and other senior leaders of the party walked in the funeral procession along with thousands of mourners from the BJP headquarters. Vajpayee, 93, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday after prolonged illness. The government has announced seven days of state mourning, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast for seven days across the country.

The air was solemn as Vajpayee’s body, draped in the tricolor was placed on a platform draped in white flowers. Earlier in the morning, hundreds of people chanted “Atal Bihari Amar Rahe” as Vajpayee’s cortege made its way from his home through the city to reach BJP office. He was given the highest national send-off today with politicians across the spectrum and foreign dignitaries attending his funeral held with state honours on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and politicians from various parties attended the funeral. Foreign dignitaries like the King of Bhutan and Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai were also present.

Now, Vajpayee’s legend is intact in collective memory. His funeral pyre was lit at around 4.57 pm on Friday beneath fading light, and the fire delivered him to immortality. Millions of Indians share his bereavement, for Vajpayee was a gem among politicians. He was blessed with a rare charisma, the respect of his rivals, and a command of the Hindi language that was manifest in his splendid oratory.

Ashes of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was accorded a state funeral today, will be immersed in every river in Uttar Pradesh including Ganga, Yamuna and Tapti. Uttar Pradesh government said that this will be done to respect the grand stature of iconic BJP leader.
