Shillong Raj Bhavan celebrates Statehood Day of Assam, Nagaland

way2barak, Dec 3: The Statehood Day of Assam and Nagaland was celebrated at Shillong Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, with Governor CH Vijayashankar underscoring the economic and cultural importance of the two states in the Northeastern region.

Speaking at the Durbar Hall, the Meghalaya Governor said Assam’s expanding economic base and its role as a regional connector place it at the centre of development efforts in the Northeast.

He noted Assam’s long cultural lineage and its contributions to national life through literature, cinema, art, and its globally recognised tea industry. Vijayashankar also referred to figures such as Srimanta Sankardev and Lachit Borphukan, describing their legacy as a continuing source of inspiration, along with Assam’s Bihu tradition.

Turning to Nagaland, the Governor highlighted the State’s strides in recent years in areas such as entrepreneurship, music, sports, tourism and community-level development. He said these achievements reflect the resilience and commitment of the Naga people.

Vijayashankar described the Statehood Day as a reminder of the “journey of sacrifice, peace, progress and unity” that shaped both States, while reiterating India’s national commitment towards the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat reinforces the idea that unity remains the country’s greatest strength. Greetings were also extended to the people of both Assam and Nagaland.

In his welcome address, HC Chaudhary, Principal Secretary to the Governor, spoke about the cultural and economic significance of commemorating the histories of the two States.

He said their traditions and their contribution to regional stability have strengthened the Northeast’s identity.

The programme included a video message from the Governor of Assam and Nagaland, followed by a documentary tracing the cultural and historical evolution of both States.

The cultural section, curated by ICCR, featured Assamese group songs, a dance tribute to Bhupen Hazarika, and Naga folk performances.
