After 13 years, new 21-member committee of Silchar Press Club formed
December 22: Well, last time the journalists registered as members of the prestigious Silchar Press Club voted was almost 13 years ago. The last 10 years witnessed the functioning of the Press Club even without a President after the resignation of Sanat Koiri from that coveted post. An attempt was made in the year 2005-06 to redraft the constitution of the Press Club and set things in proper order. For this, a 5-member committee was formed. But due to lack of fine tuning, the committee failed to come up with the desired result.
Anger was mounting among the media fraternity on the functioning of the Silchar Press Club in general and its General Secretary Shankar Dey in particular. Ultimately, on 30 July 2019, a group of journalists gave vent to their anger and marched towards the Press Club. There they locked the Press Club and formed an Ad-hoc committee to put things in order and conduct fresh elections. There wished and hoped that the 13-year long stagnation will come to an end.
A seven-member committee was formed on that day. But surprisingly, Shankar Dey, the man against whom all rained anger was also inducted as a member in the ad-hoc committee. The other members in the committee included Subir Dutta, Bikash Chakraborty, Biswajit Dutta, Anirudhha Laksar, Chayan Bhattacharjee and Uttam Kumar Saha.
A Press Club which was functioning ‘illegally’ for decades and that too without a President was now to get the taste of democracy. On 21 December, 2019, the much awaited Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Silchar Press Club was held in a local banquet hall. There was ofcourse no reading of the report by the erstwhile Secretary or filing of the statement of accounts by the Treasurer. Election was held for the 21-member body of Silchar Press Club.
Out of a total of 158 voters, 151 of them exercised their franchise. The following is the list of the new committee:
- President: Bijoy Krishna Nath
- Vice President: Monotosh Dhar, Bikash Chakraborty & Riten Bhattacharjee
- General Secretary: Shankar Dey
- Joint Secretary: (Organisation): Sujit Ghosh
- Joint Secretary: (Office): Gautam Taluqdar
- Joint Secretary: (Sports & Culture): As there was tie between Paplu Das and Santosh Chanda, so it was unanimously resolved that Paplu Das will be in this post for 1st one and & half years and Santosh Chanda will hold this post for last one and & half years.
- Treasurer: Chinmoy Nath.
Apart from them, 12 executive members were also elected out of a total of 24 candidates. The 12 members who got got elected are:
- Debashish Purkayastha: 110 votes (Highest votes received)
- Uttam Kumar Shee: 105 votes
- Dilu Das: 100 votes
- Ratnadip Deb :100 votes
- Sonali Nath: 97 votes
- Biswakalyan Purkayastha (Tilak): 92 votes
- Jyotirmoy Kanti Das: 78 votes
- Anirban Jyoti Gupta: 78 votes
- Bappi Acharjee: 78 votes
- Joydeb Sinha: 78 votes
- Shibasish Bhattacharjee: 76 votes
- Subhro Kanti Bhattacharjee: 75 votes
It needs mention here that in the election, Bijoy Krishna Nath got the highest number of votes. He contested for the post of President against Fosi Uddin Khan. Bijoy Krishna Nath got 120 votes as against 24 votes secured by Fosi Uddin Khan. Bijoy Krishna Nath won by a huge margin of 96 votes.
As the President elect Bijoy Krishna Nath was not present in the AGM on Saturday so the new committee was not administered the oath of office by the Returning Officer Advocate Niladri Dey. Shankar Dey got 100 votes for the post of General Secretary as against 49 votes secured by Abhijit Bjattacharjee. Mr. Dey won by a huge margin of 51 votes. The big victory of Shankar Dey for the post of General Secretary in a sense gave legitimacy to the long decade he was in the post and also proved his popularity among the media fraternity.
