Santanu Das, teacher of Public HS School, Silchar dies of Covid-19; condolences pour in
June 3: In a tragic incident, Santanu Das, an Assistant Teacher of Public Higher Secondary School, Silchar breathed his last on Thursday at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). He was detected as Covid-19 positive, following which Santanu Das was admitted at SMCH. Informing this, Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH stated, “Santanu Das (52) from Kanakpur, Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 2 June. He, however, passed away at 12.06 PM on 3 June.” He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Santanu Das studied at Public School and Radhamadhab College, Silchar. He initially joined at Nimaichand High School in 1996. Later on, he was transferred at Public HS School in 2004. Apart from being a teacher, he was also associated with a number of activities. He was an executive member of socio-cultural organisation – Kallol Sangha. He was also the ex-General Council Member of Silchar DSA. His colleagues, large number of his students, people of the locality expressed deep grief at the passing away of Santanu Das.
Lamenting his death, Kabita Sengupta, Principal in-charge of Public HS School said, “It is indeed an extremely heart breaking news. He was such a gem of a person. He was too close to the students and shared amiable relation with them. He was ready to undertake any responsibility entrusted upon him by the school authority. Even on 29 May, I had a talk with him over telephone, when I came to know that he was detected Covid positive. I told him to take care, but even then, I did not think in my wild dreams that Sanatnu will leave us all.”
Prasenjit Bhattacharjee (Joy) another teacher of Public School said, “Today I have lost one of my colleague cum best friend. Though he was senior to me by around 2 years, yet we shared a friendly relation and used to perform all the works in the school together. Even when I came to know that he was tested Covid positive, I asked him to purchase an oxymeter so that he could check his oxygen level. That last conversation with him is still echoing in my ears. So many memories I have with Santanu.”
Former Ward Commissioner Atanu Bhattacharjee and President of Kallol Sangha Club said, “I am at a loss of words. He was too close to us and an integral part of our club almost since its inception. He was very soft spoken and shared a good relationship with everybody. Tonight, obeying all Covid protocols, he will be cremated. I pray to the Almighty so that his soul may rest in peace.”
