way2barak May 2: The Pre-Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Department of Law, Assam University, Silchar, continued with a renewed sense of purpose, reflecting both the legacy of the institution and its forward-looking vision. The day’s proceedings brought together distinguished academicians, legal professionals, and students in a meaningful engagement with ideas shaping contemporary legal discourse.
The Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Jose Pallely, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Guwahati, delivered a reflective and philosophical address. He emphasized that justice must be understood not only within courtrooms but also within the everyday fabric of society. Drawing from customary practices and community-based systems, he highlighted that peace and justice are deeply interconnected and must emerge from within communities through shared responsibility and understanding.

The academic discourse was further enriched by the lecture delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Pallab Banerjee from IIT Kharagpur, who explored the intersection of law and technology. He discussed the functioning of artificial intelligence, explaining how such systems rely on human-generated data and patterns. He also addressed critical legal concerns, including privacy and accountability, raising important questions regarding responsibility in cases of technological failure. His lecture underscored the necessity for future legal professionals to engage with technological advancements as an integral part of legal practice.
The programme commenced with a formal welcome of the dignitaries, followed by the Welcome Address delivered by Dr. Partha Pratim Paul, Head of the Department of Law. In his address, he extended his greetings and acknowledged the collective efforts behind the successful organisation of the event, particularly appreciating the dedication and contributions of the faculty members.
Prof. Madhumita Dhar Sarkar, Dean, addressed the gathering and reflected upon the department’s steady growth over the years. She highlighted the academic achievements of the institution and its alumni, emphasizing that the occasion represented not merely the passage of time but the evolution of a legacy rooted in excellence and commitment.
The Presidential Address delivered by Prof. Chiranjeev Bhattacharjee offered a thoughtful reflection on the journey of the department as it approaches its twenty-fifth year. He described institution-building as a continuous process requiring sustained vision and collective effort. He further emphasized the importance of adapting to contemporary challenges, particularly in light of rapid technological developments such as artificial intelligence.
Prof. (Dr.) Saachi Chakraborty, in her address, provided a perspective on the organic growth of the department, likening it to a sapling that has gradually matured into a strong and flourishing institution. She stressed the importance of maintaining academic standards and highlighted the role of evaluation and accreditation in sustaining institutional credibility.
The morning session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Dristirupa Patgiri, who expressed sincere gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, and participants for their valuable presence and contributions.
Following a brief interlude, the post-lunch session resumed with an interactive segment involving public representatives, which provided students with an opportunity for direct engagement and dialogue. This was followed by a state-level inter-institutional debate competition, where participants critically engaged with contemporary constitutional issues. The debate reflected strong analytical skills, clarity of thought, and a deep understanding of the subject matter.
The programme also included an Alumni Meet, fostering interaction between former and current students and strengthening the institutional community. The day concluded with a cultural evening featuring dance and musical performances, followed by prize distribution ceremonies, bringing the event to a vibrant and memorable close.
It is also noteworthy that on 1st May 2026, the Pre-Silver Jubilee Celebration commenced with an inaugural programme marked by the presence of eminent dignitaries, insightful addresses, and engaging academic and cultural activities, setting the tone for the celebrations that followed.
