Green Roots, empowered women: ‘Women for Trees’ takes root in Silchar under National Urban Mission

Way2barak, May 21 : Silchar witnessed the promising beginning of an eco-conscious movement on Wednesday with the launch of Phase-I of ‘Women for Trees’, a unique and inspiring joint initiative by the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), designed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. The initiative brings together the strength of women and the urgency of climate action in one transformative convergence—aimed at enhancing urban green cover while empowering Self-Help Group (SHG) members across AMRUT-covered cities in India.

The first step of this nationwide campaign was marked in Silchar, where officials from the Urban Local Body (ULB) and SHG members collaboratively identified the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre near Cachar College as the initial site for upcoming plantation and maintenance activities. This selection forms the groundwork for future phases that will include extensive planting and nurturing of trees, playing a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and restoring ecological balance within the urban framework.

In a gesture of recognition and encouragement, SHG members were warmly received at the Silchar Municipal Office with welcome kits by ULB officials. The gathering was not only ceremonial but also informative, as the SHG members were sensitized about the mission’s objectives, the schedule of activities, and their pivotal role in driving this green revolution forward. The team then visited the designated site to visualize the plan on ground and develop a hands-on action strategy.

‘Women for Trees’ is not merely a plantation drive—it is a movement that intertwines environmental sustainability with community leadership, where women from the grassroots take charge of nurturing nature. With Silchar leading by example, the initiative is set to bloom across the nation, one tree at a time, one empowered woman at a time.
