Out of 345 candidates in Phase 2 of Assam Elections, 37 have criminal record!

17 candidates from Barak Valley have criminal records against them

March 24: The ensuing Assam Assembly Elections, 2021 will be conducted in three phases on 27 March, 1 April and 6 April. A total of 345 candidates are contesting in the second phase of the Assam Assembly elections this year. As per It is mandatory for political parties and candidates with criminal antecedents to publish the declaration atleast on three different dates from the date following the last date of withdrawal of candidatures and upto two days before the date of poll.

In a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), it was stated that the Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 345 candidates, who are contesting in the Assam Assembly Elections Phase II in the 39 constituencies.

The candidates who are contesting the polls from Barak Valley with declared criminal cases against them are:

  • Dipayan Chakraborty (BJP) from Silchar
  • Siddeque Ahmed (Congress) from South Karimganj
  • Milon Das (BJP) from Hailakandi
  • Humayun Kabir (Assam Jatiya Parishad) from Patharkandi
  • Aftab Uddin laskar (AGP) from Algapur
  • Anamul Haque (Independent) from Sonai
  • Sahab Uddin (Assam Jatiya Parishad) from Badarpur
  • Anjan Kumar Chanda (SUCI C) from Sonai
  • Sahabul Islam (Independent) from North Karimganj
  • Nazrul Islam Choudhury (AIFB) from North Karimganj
  • Bappi Paul (Independent) from Silchar
  • Aziz Ahmed Khan (AGP) from South Karimganj
  • Nijam Uddin (AIUDF) from Algapur
  • Subrata Kumar Nath (BJP) from Katlichera)
  • Abdul Aziz (AIUDF) from Badarpur
  • Kamakhya Prasad Mala (Congress) from Dholai
  • Karim Uddin Barbhuiya (AIUDF) from Sonai

Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: As per the report published by ADR, it was stated that out of 345 candidates analyzed, 37 (11%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Further, 30(9%) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Among the major parties, 11(32%) out of 34 candidates analysed from BJP, 5(18%) out of 28 candidates analysed from INC, 5 (71%) out of 7 candidates analysed from AIUDF, 2 (33%) out of 6 candidates analysed from AGP, 3 (16%) out of 19 candidates analysed from Assam Jatiya Parishad and One candidate each from AIFB, SUCI(C) and United Peoples Party Liberal have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: Among the major parties, 10(29%) out of 34 candidates analysed from BJP, 3(16%) out of 19 candidates analysed from Assam Jatiya Parishad, 3 (43%) out of 7 candidates analysed from AIUDF, 2 (33%) out of 6 candidates analysed from AGP, 2 (7%) out of 28 candidates analysed from INC and One candidate each from AIFB, United Peoples Party Liberal and SUCI(C) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Candidates with declared cases related to crime against women: 3 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women. Out of 3 candidates 1 candidate has declared cases related to rape (IPC Section-376).

Candidates with declared cases related to murder: 3 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) against themselves.

Red Alert Constituencies: 2(5%) out of 39 constituencies are Red alert constituencies. Red alert constituencies are those where 3 or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

All major parties contesting in Assam phase II elections have given tickets ranging from 16 % to 71% candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves. It needs mention here that the 15 Assembly constituencies of Barak Valley will also go for the polls during the second phase on 1 April, 2021.
