November 2: People from outside who come in the form of tenants, labourers, tourists and with other purposes of visit or stay for more than 24 hours in the state of Meghalaya, will have to register in their own interest as well as for the interest of the state. The registration can be done online and any person who fails to comply with the rules and furnish the information will be liable for punishment under section 176/177 of the IPC.

The Meghalaya State Cabinet on Friday approved the Amended Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2019 in the form of an ordinance. By amending the existing Act, this new provision of getting registered was accommodated.

After the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, the State Government will redraft the existing rules to ensure the simplest procedures are in place for registration, which will also be done on-line. The provision has been introduced amid increase in demands for an inner line permit system stop illegal immigration to the state.
