Aligarh to be renamed as Harigarh

Aug. 18: The spree of name changing continues in Uttar Pradesh. The Zila Panchayat of Aligarh on Monday passed a resolution to rename Aligarh as Harigarh and sent the proposal to CM Adityanath. Aligarh District Panchayat President Vijay Singh expressed hope that the state government would soon approve this and so Aligarh will get its new name of Harigarh. Meanwhile, the Zilla Panchayat of Mainpuri too passed a resolution seeking to rename Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar after sage Mayan who founded the present day Mainpuri.

Ever since Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government came to power in 2017, it has changed the names of Allahabad to Prayagraj, Faizabad to Ayodhya and Mughalsarai to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar. It has also recently reccomended changing the name of Jhansi railway station after Rani Lazmi Bai.
