Mini flood in Silchar: DC Keerthi Jalli jumps into action assures immediate action

June 2: Incessant rains for a few hours converted Silchar into a water-logged town. Torrential rainfall submerged various parts of Silchar on Tuesday. Clogged drains resulted in artificial floods in areas like Ambicapatty, National Highway, N.S. Avenue, Malugram, Link Road, Sonai Road, Public School Road etc. In many areas, the rainwater not only submerged the streets and alleyways but also flooded ground floors of many buildings. On getting information of the disruption of civic life, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Keerthi Jalli jumped into action.

Keerthi Jalli set out immediately from her office and went around the areas where rain water has disrupted life. She visited various parts of the town along with Sumit Sattavan, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Board, Water Resources Engineers, PWD Roads officials and others. She interacted with public there who informed her that problem has been aggravated because of encroachment by private households upon all drains, encroachment of shops on drains and filling up of drains with open trash and garbage by local households.

As per sources, unprecedented rainfall of 150 mm played much havoc in disrupting normal life. Speaking with the people in water logged areas, DC Jalli said, “We will take all possible steps in resolving the issue as early as possible. I would request the people not to panic.” In some parts, she was also accompanied by BJP leader Kanad Purkayastha and Er. Angshu Kumar Roy.

She visited N S Avenue Road, Radhamdhab Road, Bilpar, Purnapaul Road, Church Road and some other parts of the town. She listened to the grievances of the people with apt attention and also instructed the concerned officials to find out ways and means to address the issue with utmost priority. Immediate restorative action is being taken to address the problems as long lasting solutions of improved culvert work may take sometime, remarked the Deputy Commissioner.

People of the localities where the Deputy Commissioner visited expressed satisfaction for being able to communicate the problems faced by them. Many were hopeful that the long standing issues of clogged drains would get solved due to her positive intervention.
