NSS Unit of Jagannath Singh College organises Special Camp on Tobacco Control

April 9: A 7- day ‘Special Camp on Tobacco Control’ was organised by NSS Unit of Jagannath Singh College, Udharbond, Cachar, Assam from 2 April to 8 April, 2019 with an objective to make Assam a tobacco-free state. A total of 50 NSS volunteers of the college divided into 10 groups participated in this special camp.

The volunteers visited many schools and families of Udharbond area to sensitize and build awareness among the students and common people about the evil effects of consumption of tobacco & tobacco related products. Apart from this, the volunteers also took pledge on anti-tobacco and conducted surveys on the use of tobacco and tobacco-related products.

The NSS Special Camp was inaugurated by Dr S. Somarendro Singha, Principal of the college and Dr Shyam Mamud Barbhuiya, Programme Officer of the NSS Unit cum Asst Prof in History Department of the college. Surjya Kumar Sarma, President of the Governing Body of the college also inspired the volunteers to continue such type of social activities for the cause of the society and for the development of their personality so that they could  become responsible citizens of the nation.

Dr Shyam Mamud Barbhuiya expressed the view that the NSS volunteers of Jagannath Singh College were actively working for anti-tobacco awareness among the students and common people from September 2018 and they will continue to do the same in keeping pace with the NSS Units of different higher educational institutions. The ultimate motive is to make Assam a tobacco-free state. The mission to make Assam a tobacco-free state has been initiated by Assam Cancer Care Foundation ( A Government of Assam and TATA Trust initiative) and a pilot project named ‘Pledge for Life’ started by Sambandh Health Foundation.
