Massive traffic jam in Meherpur on Monday evening, ambulances also stranded

Dec. 14: Traffic jam has almost become an order of the day in Silchar municipal area. Off and on, roads are blocked and a long queue of vehicles on the streets has become a common sight. On Monday evening, from around 5 PM, a similar sight was witnessed in Meherpur area of Silchar til the filing of this report at 6.45 PM. Hundreds of vehicles including a few ambulances also got stranded at Meherpur area.

It needs mention here that the construction of road is going on in a stretch at Meherpur. This has further aggravated the issue of traffic congestion. Eye witnesses revealed that vehicular traffic from near Kathal Point to Medical point has come to a standstill. “The irony of the fact is that we are also stranded in the jam since almost an hour, but did not notice any traffic police in the spot. Even two to three ambulances also got stuck there,” informed an employee of a public undertaking office over mobile who was on his way back to his home.

It is definitely a serious issue that needs to be addressed by the traffic branch. Apart from Silchar Medical College & Hospital  (SMCH), there are atleast five private hospitals and a number of diagnostic centres in this road. This makes the problem more serious as many patients are at the risk of getting stranded in the massive jam.
