Destitute old man cleaned, given new clothes & food by 3 youth in Karimganj during Durga Puja

October 9: Durga Puja, the greatest festival of the Bengalis is enjoyed by people throughout Barak Valley along with rest of the country. All remain busy in purchasing new clothes for near and dear ones. Hardly, we find time and that zeal to think about those who are homeless and stay on the roads. But here is a real life story of 3 young boys from Karimganj who did an exemplary work and has won the hearts of many in social media.

An old bearded man wearing the same cloth used to stay on the road just beside the Senco Filling Station in Karimganj. Thousands of persons with 2 and four wheeler goes to that petrol pump but rarely they think of helping that destitute old man. There would hardly be any person in Karimganj who has not noticed this bearded old man sitting on the road near Senco Petrol Pump. There are many reputed social organisations in Karimganj, but none gave any serious thought of helping that old man.

However, three youth noticed that helpless old man on the day of Saptami Puja, who does not have any family, house or means of income. They approached the old man who they addressed as ‘Bridhho Dadu’ (Old Grandfather) and took him to a nearby saloon where he was given a haircut. His unkept white beard was also shaved and given a clean look. The 3 boys Jafor Ahmed, Kalyan Das and Abhishek Nath then took the old man to a hand pump and made him seat beneath it. They applied soap on his body and poured water on him and gave him a bath, may be after long months.

This was not the end. Jafor, Kalyan and Abhishek then purchased new clothes for their ‘Bridhho Dadu’ and helped him to wear the new clothes. They then gave the old man fresh food to eat. Finally, with smile on the face of the old man, they clicked pictures with him. In a facebook post, Jafor Ahmed appealed to the people at large to come forward and help such type of people by providing them with food and clothes.

Certainly, humanity is still alive. Sometimes what cannot be done by rich and powerful persons or organisations can be done by ordinary youth. This story is one such instance of love for fellow-beings. If such type of incident of helping the destitute can be multiplied, then certainly the world would become a better place to live in. way2barak.com salutes the humanitarian spirit of Jafor, Kalyan and Abhishek.
